In Jack O’Connor’s December 1961, Outdoor Life article titled, “Damn the Nonresidents!” it is interesting to see that little has changed in Idaho or across the country. Jack’s closing paragraph states:
“The chap who shouts loudest for high nonresident fees and many restrictions may not be so happy some day when he takes a dream trip to Alaska. He’ll hunt on federal lands for game which for years was protected and managed by his taxes, yet he’ll pay $200 or so for nonresident hunting rights. The resident Alaskan buys the same rights for $7.”

In 1955 Jack wrote a column titled “Is the .270 better than the .30-06?” And his answer, for the most part, was yes: https://trib.al/BuUKrkD

If you could only own one deer rifle for the rest of your life, could you really argue against the .270?

Since its introduction nearly a century ago, the .270 Wi******er has earned a place in more deer camps, elk hunts, and gun safes than almost any cartridge in American history. Its slim bullets killed all out of proportion to their weight, charming a generation of hunters and changing an entire industry.

Jack O'Connor made it famous. But it was the cartridge's real-world performance that made it legendary.

Wayne Van Zwoll digs into the history, the ballistics, and the culture behind what many still call America's cartridge.
