Thank you to everyone who joined us at the grand opening! It is a dream come true to be operating our Soup Kitchen, Food Pantry, Diaper Bank, Day Shelter, Immigrant Integration Program, Resource Center, and Free Clinic out of this beautiful new building. Now we can do even more to help people get through tough times and get back on their feet. We are grateful for every person who believed in our mission, our clients, and this project!

Sometimes we find great deals in Good Shepherd Food Bank’s online ordering system. Our Soup Kitchen manager David was in the middle of putting away a food delivery when we saw eggs were available. "Add what the kitchen needs!" we told him. "We have to get this order in before the eggs are gone!" Two good things came out of this. One: we'll have eggs *and* fish sticks at tomorrow's Food Pantry distribution. Two: David got to enjoy the cold air in the walk-in fridge for a little longer! We hope everyone is staying cool in this heat!

Being a mother is the hardest job in the world. It is working first shift, and second, and third, 7 days a week. It is exhaustion, tears, and so, so much patience. It is more love than you ever thought possible, and a constant little bit of worry that never goes away. For some moms it is even harder. Some are alone, managing all of the bills, the tantrums, the sicknesses. Some are figuring out how to give their child the safety and love that they never felt as a child. Some overcame addiction and mental illness for their kids and fight constantly to stay stable. Every day we serve amazing moms who refuse to give up. They wait in line for groceries and diapers, read to their kids in the shelter, and sit down with us to apply for a second job. They would move mountains to give their child a good life. We see you, we support you, and we are honored to be able to help. Happy Mother's Day ❤️

Thank you Hardy, Wolf & Downing and WGME CBS 13 News, Portland ! They filmed this amazing ad for our programs - you may have seen it on TV! We've been in our new building for 3 months but we are still grateful, every day, that we get to work here. We have so much more room to help our community with food, jobs, medical care, shelter, diapers, and more. It's really a dream come true!

Twice recently we posted to celebrate our clients getting jobs. Both times they were immigrants. And both times the comments were ugly: cursing at them, making fun of them. We want to explain a few things:

1. We can help anyone apply for jobs, whether they are white, black, purple, or neon green.

2. Anyone can have a good work ethic, no matter where they were born or what their accent sounds like. A hard worker is a hard worker.

3. Jobs give hope. A job means standing in the checkout line at the grocery store instead of the line at our Food Pantry. A job means a family car. A job means rent paid and new shoes for your child. People want to earn the dignity and security of a paycheck: good for them.

4. Every job is important. Our clients may be going to work in warehouses, in retail, in cleaning, jobs that often go ignored. But the people who do this work still deserve respect.

We play our small role, helping people get that job that can change their life. Our clients are grateful for the hand up. Employers are happy to fill vacant positions. And our celebrations, and the many positive people cheering for our clients, will be louder than the unkindness ❤️

*5 jobs in 5 days!* Every day we help people find work: resume writing, job searches, job applications, new hire packets. Many come to our Food Pantry and come back later for one-on-one help finding a job or a second job. Last week every day a grateful person came in with a job offer! Their interview had gone well and now they had a stack of tax, payroll, and other forms to fill out. We're proud of the work our employment team does and even more proud of these 5 folks starting their new jobs!

Every day people come in for help writing their resume and applying for jobs. Hundreds of people every year who are grateful for our Food Pantry & Diaper Bank but anxious to get back on their feet. Then they go to job interviews and come back smiling, with their new hire paperwork! A little help from one of our staff members and this gentleman has a full time job!

David worked at Bowdoin Dining for more than 30 years before becoming the Kitchen Manager here in our soup kitchen. Every day he'd come here wearing his Bowdoin hat. And every day Bates College students would come here and volunteer in the soup kitchen. Finally, two of our volunteers couldn't take it anymore. They surprised him with a gift: a new Bates hat! Sorry Polar Bears, David is a Bates Bobcat now! 🐾

Our food pantry feeds over a thousand kids each year. The kids get food but also the freedom to be a kid and worry about kid stuff, instead of worrying about whether or not they'll get dinner. This young man came with his mom to help her with her "shopping." Mom got lots of fruits and vegetables. He scored a frozen pizza, a big treat for a little guy!
