VELLA GULF, Solomon Islands (Aug. 5, 2013) The Military Sealift Command dry cargo and ammunition ship USNS Mathew Perry (T-AKE 9), the amphibious dock landing ship USS Pearl Harbor (LSD 52) and the Royal New Zealand Navy ship HMNZS Canterbury (LSL 421) transit the Vella Gulf during Pacific Partnership 2013. Working at the invitation of each host nation, U.S. Navy forces are joined by non-governmental organizations and regional partners that include Australia, Canada, Colombia, France, Japan, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, and New Zealand to improve maritime security, conduct humanitarian assistance and strengthen disaster-response preparedness. NRS Lewisville Rating of the Week: Logistics Specialist

Logistics Specialist Sailors manage inventories of repair parts/general supplies and distribute mail for ships, squadrons, and shore-based activities. They procure, receive, store and issue material and repair components. They utilize financial accounting and database systems to perform inventory and financial management functions. Additionally, they sort and distribute all official and personal mail, manage money order and stamp inventories, and maintain financial and inventory reports.

Their "A School" is 9 weeks in Meridian, Mississippi, and then they go to submarine school for 4 weeks in Groton, Connecticut. Talk about travel opportunities. 4 duty stations in one year!

NRS Lewisville Rating of the Week: Gunner's Mate

Gunner’s mates are responsible for the operation and maintenance of guided missile launching systems, underwater explosive weapons such as torpedoes, rockets and missiles and the systems used to launch them, gun mounts and other ordnance equipment, as well as small arms magazines. They work with electrical and electronic circuitry: mechanical, hydraulic and pneumatic systems.

After completion of their 27 week Navy school training, GMs serve on combat surface craft and tenders, at aviation activities and in weapons installations, ordnance depots or other shore stations in the United States or overseas.
