Residential Fire After RV Extends to Leonardtown Home

On Monday, August 10, 2026, at approximately 6:53 a.m., firefighters from Leonardtown, Second District, Bay District, and Hollywood were dispatched to the 42500 block of Woodbury Place in Leonardtown for a reported structure fire.

Initial callers reported smoke and fire showing from the rear of the address. Additional information provided to dispatchers indicated an RV behind the home was on fire and threatening the residence. Firefighters arrived within approximately six minutes and found an RV heavily involved in fire, with flames spreading to the rear of a two-story single-family home.

Due to the conditions found on arrival, a working incident task force was requested, bringing additional firefighters and resources from Leonardtown, Mechanicsville, Bay District, Ridge, Hollywood, Seventh District, Second District, Solomons, Hughesville, and St. Leonard. Additional support also responded from Calvert and Charles counties to assist at the scene and provide station coverage.

Neighbors reported that one occupant may have been trapped inside the residence. Firefighters made entry into the home and conducted searches of the first floor, second floor, and basement. All primary searches were negative, and no occupants or victims were located inside the residence.

Crews deployed multiple attack lines and worked on several areas of the home as the fire extended from the exterior into the first and second floors, attic space, and roof area. Firefighters established water supply operations, advanced hoselines inside the residence, opened concealed spaces to check for hidden fire, and performed overhaul to ensure the fire was fully extinguished.

The fire was placed under control at approximately 7:48 a.m., nearly one hour after the initial dispatch. Firefighter rehabilitation resources were requested due to the extended operation and the physical demands of working at the scene.

Two firefighters were transported to a local hospital for evaluation with unknown, non-life-threatening injuries.

SMECO, the St. Mary’s County Sheriff’s Office, and the Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office responded to assist. The origin and cause of the fire remain under investigation by the Maryland State Fire Marshal’s Office.

The department thanks the responding firefighters, EMS personnel, dispatchers, mutual aid companies, law enforcement partners, and utility representatives who assisted during this incident.

Residents are reminded that fires involving RVs, decks, vehicles, and exterior areas can quickly extend into nearby homes. Working smoke alarms, clear exit paths, and a practiced home escape plan remain important parts of protecting your family in the event of a fire.

Bay District VFD Participates in National Night Out

Members of the Bay District Volunteer Fire Department spent the evening visiting neighborhoods throughout the community as part of National Night Out, an annual event focused on strengthening relationships between residents, emergency services, and public safety partners.

National Night Out was introduced in 1984 by the National Association of Town Watch as a community-building campaign designed to promote neighborhood safety, crime prevention awareness, and stronger partnerships between residents and public safety organizations. Since then, the event has grown into a nationwide tradition that brings neighbors together and encourages open communication with the agencies that serve them.

For Bay District VFD, National Night Out is more than a yearly event. The department has participated for many years, using the opportunity to meet residents, answer questions, show apparatus, and help families better understand the role of the fire and EMS service in the community.

This year, Bay District crews visited several neighborhoods and community gathering locations, including Bay Ridge Estates, Greenbrier, Westbury, Spring Valley, Nicollete Park, Wildewood Community Pool, Oak Drive, Wildewood’s Birch Way area, and Woods at Myrtle Point.

Participating units included Engine 31, Squad 3, Truck 3, Engine 91, Tower 9, Engine Tanker 94, Brush 3, Brush 9, Utility 3, Utility 9, and Engine 32. Firefighters and EMS personnel had the opportunity to speak with residents of all ages, provide a close-up look at emergency vehicles and equipment, and share important fire and life safety information.

National Night Out also gives residents a chance to meet the men and women who respond during emergencies before an emergency occurs. These conversations help build trust, improve public awareness, and strengthen the connection between the department and the neighborhoods it serves.

“National Night Out is always a valuable opportunity for our members to connect directly with the community,” a department representative said. “We appreciate the residents who welcomed us into their neighborhoods and took the time to talk with our crews.”

Bay District VFD extends its appreciation to the neighborhood organizers, residents, families, and community partners who helped make this year’s National Night Out a success.

House Fire in Lexington Park

On Monday, August 3, 2026, at approximately 10:17 p.m., Bay District Stations 3 & 9 and surrounding mutual aid companies were dispatched to the 21500 block of Port Court in Lexington Park for a reported residential structure fire.

Engine 32, Truck 3, Squad 3, Engine 91 Chief 3, Chief 3A and Chief 9B responded, along with mutual aid units from neighboring fire departments and EMS agencies. Dispatch information indicated a house fire involving the rear deck area with possible extension into the residence. The caller reported that occupants were out of the home and that no one was trapped.

Chief 9B (B. Tarleton) arrived first and reported a single-family residential structure with visible fire showing from Side C, the rear of the home. Chief 9B established Command, completed a full 360-degree size-up of the structure, and reported that the fire had extended from the rear exterior into the attic area. The home was built over a basement with a walk-out on Side C; the basement was not initially involved.

Engine 32 and Truck 3 arrived shortly after the initial size-up. Engine 32 deployed a 200-foot attack line to Side C and began an exterior fire attack, quickly knocking down the bulk of the fire on the rear of the home. Truck 3 positioned aerial ladders, prepared the aerial device for potential operations, and assisted crews with ventilation and access.

After the exterior fire was knocked down, Engine 32 advanced the attack line into the second floor area under the direction of Chief 9B, who was assigned as the Division 2 Supervisor. Truck 3 crews followed the attack team and opened up concealed areas of the structure to locate and extinguish hidden fire. Crews found the primary fire involvement in the attic space, where they conducted extensive overhaul and extinguished remaining hot spots.

Chief 3 (J. Turner) arrived and assumed Command from Chief 9B. Chief 9B remained assigned to Division 2, Chief 13 was assigned as the Division 1 Supervisor, and Chief 7 served as the Safety Officer. Rapid intervention personnel were also established on Side A as crews continued interior operations.

Fire extension into Division 1 was minimal. Crews completed primary searches of the first floor, second floor, and basement, with all searches reported negative. The fire was declared under control approximately 20 minutes after crews began fire attack. Once the incident was placed under control, initial attack crews exited the structure for rehabilitation while fresh crews entered to complete overhaul and check for remaining hot spots. A secondary search was later completed and was also negative.

One adult occupant and two dogs resided at the home. The occupant and one dog safely escaped before firefighters arrived. A second dog remained unaccounted for at the conclusion of suppression operations.

During the incident, one Bay District firefighter was evaluated on the scene for a medical issue. The firefighter was transported to MedStar St. Mary’s Hospital with non-life-threatening injuries for further evaluation, where he was treated and released. No other injuries were reported.

The American Red Cross responded to the scene following suppression operations and assisted the displaced resident.

Firefighters from Bay District, NAS Patuxent River, Hollywood, Leonardtown, Second District, and additional assisting units operated on the scene. Command was terminated shortly after midnight.

The Bay District Volunteer Fire Department reminds residents to have working smoke alarms on every level of the home, develop and practice a home escape plan, and ensure all family members know two ways out of every room.

Yesterday, Red Bull made a surprise visit across Southern Maryland to show their appreciation for our first responders. During their visit, they stopped by to donate a few cans to our members, helping keep our energy levels up while serving our community.
