Green Dot Lexington

Green Dot Lexington Empowering communities to SAFELY Intervene to help make Lex safer for EVERYONE! Our everyday moments matter.

Green Dot is a nationally celebrated non-violence program that believes our everyday decisions hold the power to prevent and reduce violence in our home community. Each time we choose to act to ensure the safety of others, we are putting a green dot (a moment of safety) on our community map. We love Lexington, and we envision Lexington's community map to be filled with green dots, showing that her

e in the bluegrass, we do not tolerate any form of violence, and everyone is expected to do their part in keeping this community safe. Through interactive talks and trainings, Green Dot Lexington educates community members to be aware and active bystanders, equipping them with the personal tools needed to peacefully resolve potential moments of conflict and live lives that promote respect and safety for all. This page is like a green dot: an inspiring spot in cyberspace where Lexingtonians can gather, engage, connect, inspire and empower each other as we begin to actively place green dots on our community map. Let's claim our superpowers as active bystanders and rock the green dot! For more information about how you can be involved with Green Dot or how to bring a Green Dot training to your workplace or organization, please email us at [email protected]

WOW, just WOW. After 3 years of trying, we FINALLY held our very first IN-PERSON Bystander training and it was a huge success. We had a FULL House, with 15 people in attendance. Our hosts, the Hartland Homeowners Association, lead by Lisa Richardson and April Thompson were AHHH-MAZING HOSTS and put together an awesome spread - a "Chili-Cuterie" as Lisa dubbed it - DELISH! As the facilitator and a Neighbor, I'm so grateful to all the NEW ACTIVE BYSTANDERS who have committed to doing their part to help reduce and end power-based violence in our community!

If you'd like to host a training for your neighborhood, email us @Lexingtonky.gov

October is Domestic Violence Awareness Month - DV doesn't just affect the adults involved, but it's greatest impact can be on the children who witness it! If you or someone you love grew up in a household with DV, this workshop series may offer you healing and support. Go to CDV.org for more info.

We strive to increase awareness, educate adults who faced CDV, and empower adults to help children.

ALERT!

On Wednesday, October 4, FEMA and the FCC are conducting a nationwide test of the emergency alert system. This means that at approximately 2:20 an alert will be sent to all cell phones in the US. The only sure way to keep the phone from making a sound is by turning it off. Putting it on silent may not be enough.

If you know of any survivors with hidden emergency phones that are kept on, you may want to consider letting them know this alert could cause their hidden phone to make sound.

09/24/2023

Our hearts are troubled for our city and the families involved in the tragic deaths yesterday. Domestic violence impacts the whole community and it can tear everyone apart. I pray we can all find ways to come together and serve one another, to attend to the hurt, the pain, the shame, and the guilt. I'm grateful the young man who attempted to intervene wasn't physically hurt and that he was willing to try to help when he saw someone in need. I hope that we as a city and community will wrap our arms around him and the families as they grieve and heal.

If you were involved or a neighbor, please consider reaching out to a therapist, faith leader, or local community organization like GreenHouse17, The Nest - Center for Women, Children and Families, Rhema Word Foundation also known as Rhema Wings and others to get help in the grieving process or for other resources. Take time for yourself.

09/06/2023

Thinking about those who survive domestic violence and those who judge them while trying to survive. What they need is for you to believe and support them. Instead of "Why doesn't she just leave?" let's start asking "why does he abuse?"

Wʜʏ ᴅᴏᴇsɴ’ᴛ sʜᴇ ʟᴇᴀᴠᴇ?

Because he has her so brainwashed that it’s all her fault and that she’s no good to anyone and no one will want her or love her and there’s no way she can possibly make it on her own.

Wʜʏ ᴅᴏᴇsɴ’ᴛ sʜᴇ ʟᴇᴀᴠᴇ?

Because she thinks that if she just tries harder and if she’s a better wife and a better mom that maybe he will be happy with her and he wouldn’t get so angry with her. And maybe he will be the same sweet, charming man that he was when they first met.

Wʜʏ ᴅᴏᴇsɴ’ᴛ sʜᴇ ʟᴇᴀᴠᴇ?

Because he has her convinced that if she tries he will hurt or kill her or her family. Because he has threatened to tell the judge that she is a bad mom and will take away her kids and she will never see them again. Because he has taken away her money and convinced her that she has no good job qualities to make it on her own financially and she will always need him.

More people are concerned with why women stay in abusive relationships than why men are abusing women. Unless you’ve been in an abusive relationship people have no idea how hard it is to escape. Abusers are able to fool those outside the home because they usually only abuse those inside the home.

They need your support.
They need your love.
They do not need your judgement.

Red Light. Green Dot.

A bystander takes action to check in and ensure safety. Here is his story…

“I was running late to meet a friend last night. I had the usual things running through my head, 'Aw man, I should have left on time, I don’t like running late...its ok, I will get there when I get there.'

As I was sitting at a stoplight downtown I saw a young lady backed into a corner swinging with all of her might at a young man. He started swinging at her and neither were making contact but from where I was I saw them gesticulating as though they were yelling at each other.

I started to flash my lights and honk my horn. As soon as the light turned green, I drove as fast as I could over to them, hit the flashers and asked the young lady what was going on. She said, 'We are ok.' The young man would not look at me and was shuffling back and forth. I asked her if she was ok and if she needed anything.

The car behind me honked and she again said she was ok. I let her know I saw what was happening and was concerned for her safety and she paused for a moment, smiled at me and thanked me. She looked at the guy she was with, said, 'I’m really ok,' and walked away. The young man still would not look at me.

Then I knew I was right on time.”
