I haven't posted in a while because we're planning and packing to move from Kentucky to Georgia in less than 2 weeks!
I'm still checking messages regularly, but moving across states (with 3 going kids) takes effort and energy!
But I'll keep you all posted as we get settled in!!
At least online businesses allow for easier moving than having a physical business!
And, my husband has a couple weeks between finishing the old job and starting the new one, which was not the case when we moved in 2021.

When I first had my idea for my online business, Agape Pah, in 2021, I talked about it with people (some Deaf and some hearing) who work in the Deaf World (college professors, interpreters, nonprofit business leaders, etc.).
One piece of advice that I received from a sign language interpreter who has a Deaf son when I said "I want to be that bridge between the Deaf World and Hearing World and want to help hearing people become more 'comfortable' interacting with the Deaf World", she warned me against helping provide "comfort". She explained that Deaf people, as well as people with many disabilities are constantly getting into "uncomfortable" situations interacting with the hearing world around them. Bringing "comfort" to the situation is not the solution.
It is more beneficial to teach the world to be more deaf-friendly (or disability-friendly), which could mean more confident interactions and more effective communication, but that could also mean embracing the uncomfortable.
Jamie Shields puts it well in this post. When a disability accommodation is requested, it is often the worst possible response to say the things that people might think of to make the "uncomfortable" conversation more "comfortable".

I got my Social Work license, but I let it lapse...
Our family will be moving. We will be moving to Atlanta, GA area before the end of March. While I go through our things to pack and get rid of anything we don't need, I found my Social Work license from the short time that I lived in the Chicago, IL area after grad school.
After my Illinois season, I moved to the Omaha, NE/ Council Bluffs, IA area, where I worked at Iowa School for the Deaf, then Nebraska VR. I met and married my husband in Omaha, and now we're in Lexington, KY, but about to move to Georgia.
My positions in Iowa and Nebraska did not require a Social Work license, so I eventually let the license lapse. The blue graduation cord was from my Bachelors in Social Work graduation. I found it in the same box with the license (I don't remember what the blue cord meant).
I believe experiences and gaining credentials are important in different season and shape us as humans. I'm excited to see what experiences and credentials living in Georgia and running Agape Pah, and continuing to raise my children will lend!

I'm just putting out this friendly reminder... and yes, my 6-year-old dropped my porcelain ILY (I Love You) Precious Moment, and a finger is broken off... life of a working mom of 3 young kids :)

This morning, I listened to an interview: Jamaal Bernard interviewing Dr. John Perkins (https://lnkd.in/gSp7Tv6e)
Two things Dr. Perkins said (near the end of the interview) stuck out to me:
"I lose hope when I hold too tightly to my own opinion."
and
"Do you care enough to enter the pain of others?"
Are there opinions I'm holding too tightly, leading to a loss of hope?
Am I focused on my own things so much that I'm not willing to have empathy and enter the pain of others?
Food for thought.

One more year without seeing the sign language interpreter signing on TV showing the pregame and halftime performance at the Superbowl.
My husband pointed out that he does not remember a Superbowl game when the word "Deaf" was said by the announcer. They said that the "National Association for the Deaf sponsored the interpreters."
I don't make a big deal out of people talking about Deafness because it's such a part of my world. Was mentioning NAD (National Association for the Deaf) a step towards CBS becoming accessible and maybe next year, they will have interpreters on screen with the performer for all to see? That is my hope!

As soon as I saw @shaheem ready on the TV, ready to interpret the first song for the Super Bowl pregame show, I was excited. It then felt like they had the camera on him much longer than needed, I started to think, "Now I want to see what is happening around him." That is saying something coming from someone who likes to give deafness and sign language plenty "time to shine."
Then, I got the website up on my phone and refreshed the screen to watch the interpreter during any moments he wasn't on screen. I was ready.
The music started, and the camera went away (and stayed away) from the sign language... and nothing on the website until what felt like a full minute later. Finally, I could watch the split screen of the signer/ band and the interpreter with what felt like a full minute delay from what I was seeing on the TV.
Same thing with each performance: they were not shown on screen signing at all, and the website with the sign language performance has what felt like a full minute delay. (Usher and all did a great job with the halftime performance, in my opinion; I think the last couple of halftime shows have been planned with the millennial audience in mind).
It felt like CBS wanted to appear diverse and inclusive while not being willing to embrace the potentially uncomfortable to some, sign language viewable to the non-signing public.
Let's put more sign language and Deaf people who are interested in sharing their world with the hearing public out for the world to become comfortable with the Deaf World... that's my opinion! I'd love to hear from others!

It's Super Bowl weekend. I normally watch the game for the commercials and the half-time show, unless there is a team or player that I really care to win, and this year is no different.
Last year, I especially wanted to watch the half-time show knowing who would be performing in sign language: @seanforbes and @wawasworld1. I was then disappointed to find out, around the time that the game was starting, that they would not be on the screen for the world to see, but would be online, and an account would need to be created to watch them online. I quickly got online and tried creating an account. After 10 minutes of struggling with the website, I gave up and waited to watch their performance online days later. I know that my experience is similar to what others experienced a year ago.
At least this year, we are given a website to watch the full American Sign Language Performance before Sunday: https://www.cbssports.com/watch/nfl/LET-189692225 and it does not require creating any kind of account to watch.
I still hope that the sign language performances are able to be viewed (at least partially) on the screen with Usher and Reba, etc., to bring sign language and deafness to the view of the millions who watch the game.... just like (despite how frustrating the post was for many Deaf people) Elon Musk's recent tweet "What's the point of sign language in a video if you have subtitles? Am I missing something?" brought accommodations for the Deaf World into the view of thousands, of not millions. More of my thoughts on that tweet were in my post from yesterday.

The Deaf Community is talking about Elon Musk's recent tweet!
First: I'm glad he had brought attention to the Deaf World.
I know that this is a question that many hearing people have had, and Elon put the question out to the world.
He's getting Deaf people coming out in droves and sharing their thoughts.
My thoughts on the tweet: I talk about accessibility to information all of the time. That can be done in a variety of ways. Some ways to make information accessible work better for different people or in different situations.
If you met one Deaf person, you met one Deaf person, that's it. Different things work better for different people.
Something about American Sign Language that many hearing people don't realize: ASL does not follow English word order. Culturally Deaf people use ASL. ASL is not universal (it's not even the only signed language in America). Some Deaf people prefer to read English content. Some Deaf people follow information much more easily when it is in ASL.
I'd love to hear your thoughts!

Is there sign language in heaven?
This question assumes that you have the same belief about what happens after life on Earth that I have.
Assuming that there is something somewhere with no sadness and no sickness and no conflict, would there be sign language? My belief is, yes!
In a world where we all have clear communication, will that communication be verbal? I don't think it would need to be.
Sure, there will be no deafness in heaven, I accept that. But sign language.... what do others think?

The Americans With Disabilities Act requires providing "reasonable accommodations" to provide accessibility. This could mean a variety of things, but the companies who are willing to go above and beyond the reasonable run risk of attracting some great potential employees who have disabilities. And with them comes loyalty of many potential customers who happen to have disabilities.
The choice is yours. Do you want the risks that come with providing more than the "reasonable accommodations"?

I'm getting ready to start a membership community this spring for service providers wanting to learn how to successfully serve Deaf/ hard of hearing clients/ customers.

Working towards complete accessibility for the Deaf Community is something that I was created to do.
Do you know a purpose that you were created to fulfill?
DM me if you are interested in joining the efforts to make the world a more accessible place for Deaf/ hard of hearing individuals.... or if you just want to have a discussion about passions and callings đ
You were created for a purpose. What is your purpose? I was created to live on the bridge between the Deaf World and the Hearing World.
(My 3-year-old daughter's name came from the book of Esther....prize goes to anyone who can guess her name. Hint: it's not Esther)

I made a mistake!
I am here to teach others how to best serve the Deaf Community and then I don't make my videos accessible. I have created videos that have not included captioning or sign language.
Learn from my mistakes!
Join the community, as we help each other provide the best possible services to the Deaf community!
