🌈 Happy Pride Month! Celebrate with Cary Library by exploring our curated collection of LGBTQ+ books—perfect for readers of all ages. Discover new stories, voices, and perspectives all month long! 📚✨

Today's selection is a children's book: "Call Me Gray" by Andrew Larsen and Bells Larsen.

This poignant award winning picture book is a wonderful start to celebrate Pride Month. Father and son authors, Andrew and Bells Larsen, share their very personal story of how Bells first talked to his Dad about feeling mixed up. Dad doesn’t really understand his depth right away but Bells perseveres, anxious for his Dad to understand him. The beauty of this book unfolds quietly as we see strength, honesty, acceptance and love coming together.

In celebration of the completion of our Children’s Room renovation, we have asked our staff to share with us their favorite children’s books, either from their own childhoods or more recent favorites.

Nicole’s all time favourite book is "Ballet Shoes" by Noel Streatfield. "Over the years I’ve been thrilled to watch this wonderful story be adapted for a BBC TV series, a movie and last year a stage production at the National Theatre in London. I believe my love for this book and the lasting impression it left on me at a young age, not to mention the cast of very colourful characters and later meeting the author herself, led me to seek out more stories focused on families, not always blood relatives yet humans who value strength in community, determination, kindness and love for each other."

Continuing the theme, not surprisingly Nicole loved "The Penderwicks" series by Jeanne Birdsall and hands down her favourite modern day family is "The Vanderbeekers of 141st Street" by Karina Yan Glaser. "I cannot say enough about this beautifully written series which has so much in common with my own family and having met this author too, I can attest she is just as lovely as the characters she has created."

"Can you look up the list of books I checked out in the last few weeks/months?" is a question Cary Library staff are frequently asked by patrons and though we cannot access this information for you, the great news is that YOU can, as soon as you set yourself up to do so.

Here’s how:
1. Simply log into your library account (you will need your library card number or user name and password)
2. Find and select Reading History
3. Read the Privacy Statement
4. Choose Start Recording Reading History

It is that simple!

From that point on, all your checkouts will be recorded. You can delete the entire saved list or individual titles at any time, or opt out of recording your Reading History altogether.

In celebration of the completion of our Children’s Room renovation, we have asked our Cary Library staff to share with us their favorite children’s books, either from their own childhoods or more recent favorites.

Jean’s first favorite book is "Junket" by Anne H. White, illustrated by Robert McCloskey." Junket is an Airedale farm dog who wakes up one morning to find that his farm has new owners, and all the farm animals are gone. His mission, with the help of the new owners’ children, is to bring back all the animals that belong in a proper farm. As a child, I loved the incompetency and complete cluelessness of the parents, and the skill of the kids and the dog in getting what they wanted."

Another of Jean’s favorites is "The Gammage Cup" by Carol Kendall. "I think The Gammage Cup is a fantasy story that belongs among the great ones of Tolkien and Rawlings."

Jean also loves the classic "Black Beauty" by Anna Sewell. "The sixth-place best seller in the English language, Black Beauty is one of the children’s books that I read over and over again. Told from a horse’s point of view, it fed a great love of horses and concern for animal welfare in me and in countless other young people over the last hundred and fifty years."

In celebration of the completion of our Children’s Room renovation, we have asked our Cary Library staff to share with us their favorite children’s books, either from their own childhoods or more recent favorites.

Erin’s first choice for favorite children’s book is "Catherine Called Birdy" by Karen Cushman. "Catherine is a headstrong teenager – in 1290 – who’s doing whatever she can to fend off the awful suitors her dad wants her to marry. She tells the story through her diary entries, which is a style of fiction I love to read. She’s hysterical (one of her more creative swears is 'God’s Thumbs!'), sarcastic, and clever – a great combination that makes her one of my favorite protagonists in children’s chapter books."

Another favorite is "Hand, Hand, Fingers, Thumb" by Al Perkins, illustrated by Eric Gurney. "I loved this book as a kid and had even more fun reading it to my nephews and my own kids. Monkeys with 70s sideburns, drumming (and strumming and fiddling) and rhyming and generally creating chaos – what’s not to love?"

Erin also loves the book "But Not the Hippopotamus" by Sandra Boynton. "I adore everything Sandra Boynton does but this is my favorite book of hers. The animals are adorably crazy and very often over-excited (she uses a lot of exclamation marks in her books). The story is funny but meaningful (it’s about being brave, being inclusive and being a good friend). And her rhymes are deceptively simple but so clever. It’s also a really fun book to read with a kid because they can do the 'punchline' every few pages."
