This weekend, the Lafayette County Sheriff’s Office joined the community in celebrating a historical achievement hidden in Lafayette County history.

In 1919, Minnie Mae Talbott made history when she was elected as the first female sheriff in the United States, serving Lafayette County. This weekend’s event highlighted the challenges she faced and the significance of being a female sheriff in a time where women did not yet have the right to vote.

We extend our appreciation to Sheriff Carrie Melte of Linn County Sheriff’s Office who joined us in celebration and recognition of this milestone as a female sheriff herself.
