This cartoon really gets to the essence of the reality of socialism.

Those pushing socialism do it by promising free stuff. Free healthcare, free housing, free food, and on and on.

They never mention that someone has to pay for all of these “free” things and that the burden falls on the working man.

You can either pay a month premium to an insurance company for health insurance or you can pay it to the government. Either way, you pay.

When you need actual medical care, our healthcare system is vastly superior to countries with “free” healthcare. Especially when it comes to access to doctors, specialists, diagnostics, and surgery.

For example, in Canada, where healthcare is “free” only about 27 percent of adults with a primary care doctor were able to get a same-day or next-day appointment for a non-urgent need.

More than one-third of Canadians who saw a specialist waited three months or longer just for an initial consultation.

Then it gets worse.

The Fraser Institute’s 2025 physician survey found the median wait from specialist referral to treatment in Canada was 28.6 weeks. Orthopedic surgery was 48.6 weeks. Neurosurgery was 49.9 weeks.

A recent survey of major metro areas in the USA found the average wait for an orthopedic surgery appointment was about 12 days.

Is our system perfect? Not even close.

But if your hip is shot, your knee is failing, or your spine is a wreck, the difference between 12 days and nearly 49 weeks is not some academic debate. It is severe pain, mobility, work, dignity, and quality of life.

The Canadian healthcare system also has MAID. In 2024, 16,499 Canadians received medical assistance in dying, representing 5.1 percent of all deaths.

You can be certain any “Medicare-for-All” plan will include the same.

So yes, people can call Canadian health care “free” all they want. It is paid for in taxes, waiting, suffering, and too often, despair.

Why anyone in America would want socialism or socialized medicine is beyond my comprehension,.

Would you trade America’s health care system for a system like Canada’s where it’s all “free?”

This is exactly why the Electoral College matters.

Kamala Harris recently embraced the idea of abolishing it, and she is hardly alone. Democratic lawmakers have introduced constitutional amendments that would replace the Electoral College with a direct national popular vote. Harris herself has been talking about the issue for years, and in 2026 she again supported reconsidering the system.

I think that would be a terrible mistake.

The United States is not one giant national election district. We are a union of states, with dramatically different populations, economies, cultures and political interests. The Electoral College forces presidential candidates to build geographically broader coalitions instead of simply running up enormous vote totals in the biggest population centers.

Without that structure, candidates would have every incentive to concentrate even more heavily on the largest metropolitan areas and population centers. Rural voters, small states and much of the interior of the country would have far less influence over who occupies the White House.

That matters because people in Iowa, Wyoming, Tennessee or Montana may have very different priorities from voters in Los Angeles, New York City or San Francisco. A national government should have to listen to both.

Would abolishing the Electoral College guarantee that a conservative could never win the presidency again? No one can honestly guarantee that. Political coalitions change. But it would fundamentally alter presidential campaigns and transfer even more electoral power toward densely populated parts of the country.

Fortunately, this cannot simply be done by passing an ordinary bill. The Electoral College is embedded in the Constitution, and changing that system requires a constitutional amendment.

That means two-thirds of both houses of Congress must propose the amendment, followed by ratification from three-fourths of the states, or the alternative constitutional convention process would have to be used.

For now, that is an extraordinarily high hurdle, exactly as the Constitution intended.

Yesterday was a great day at the Missouri State Fair, and there is still more to come. Senator Schmitt gives you the rundown here. Last day is Sunday, August 23rd. Thank you Senator for all you do to help make the Fair a success every year and for lending an ear and visiting with Missourians at the Governor’s Ham Breakfast each year. It is a special event indeed, open to the public with a paid ticket, and it is held annually by whichever Governor is currently in office. Don’t miss what’s still yet to come at the !
