The Lexington Division of Emergency Management has announced activation of Phase 1 of its Extreme Heat Plan. The activation will be in effect beginning at 12:00 p.m. today (Monday, August 31st) through Friday, September 4th.

At this stage of activation:
❄️ Partner organizations of the Office of Homelessness Prevention and Intervention will operate as cooling stations

🚍 Lextran will offer free, fixed route rides to identified cooling stations for individuals experiencing homelessness

📢 Outreach teams will be in the community distributing supplies and assisting persons in accessing cooling stations and shaded spaces.

In addition to cooling stations operated by OHPI partners, Parks and Recreations has the following community centers which individuals can access:

Lexington will activate Phase One of the Heat Plan beginning at noon today, Monday, August 31, through Friday, September 4, 2026.

As part of Phase One, the following actions will occur:
- LexTran will provide rides to cooling stations for those experiencing homelessness free of charge.
- Outreach teams will distribute supplies throughout the community.
- Lexington's community centers will be open until the early evening.
- City waste collection will begin early. Residential collection will begin at 4:30 a.m. and commercial collection at 3:30 a.m. Residents should place carts on the curb the night before their collection day.
- The Office of Homelessness Prevention and Intervention will open cooling stations, with locations at Arbor Youth Services, Lexington Rescue Mission, Mountain Comprehensive Care Center, New Life Day Center, New Vista Drop-In Center, Nathaniel Mission, and Recovery Café Lexington.
