Lexington Emergency Management will test its network of outdoor warning sirens TODAY, Wednesday, September 2, 2026, at 10 a.m.

If you live near a park or golf course, expect to hear the outdoor siren sound a series of chimes followed by a voice announcement, “This is a test.”

This is a regularly scheduled test - THERE IS NO EMERGENCY - THIS IS FOR TESTING PURPOSES ONLY. Please do not call 9-1-1 about the siren test.

Remember: Lexington’s outdoor siren system is designed to alert people who are outdoors. The siren system is not intended to alert people inside homes, apartments, or office buildings.

Lexington is now included in the Heat Advisory through Thursday evening. Bring your pets inside, check on neighbors, and stay hydrated!

Biggest change is that a heat advisory has been expanded across the entire area. Highs in the mid-upper 90s with heat index values of 100-107 degrees are expected. Little heat relief is expected overnight as lows only reach the low to mid 70s. Overall, stay hydrated and check on your neighbors this week!

Lexington is under a Heat Advisory until 8 p.m. EDT on Thursday, September 3, 2026. Hot temperatures and high humidity may cause heat illnesses. Drink plenty of fluids, stay indoors, and stay out of the sun. Bring pets inside and check on friends and neighbors.

Lexington will activate Phase One of the Heat Plan beginning at noon today, Monday, August 31, through Friday, September 4, 2026.

As part of Phase One, the following actions will occur:
- LexTran will provide rides to cooling stations for those experiencing homelessness free of charge.
- Outreach teams will distribute supplies throughout the community.
- Lexington's community centers will be open until the early evening.
- City waste collection will begin early. Residential collection will begin at 4:30 a.m. and commercial collection at 3:30 a.m. Residents should place carts on the curb the night before their collection day.
- The Office of Homelessness Prevention and Intervention will open cooling stations, with locations at Arbor Youth Services, Lexington Rescue Mission, Mountain Comprehensive Care Center, New Life Day Center, New Vista Drop-In Center, Nathaniel Mission, and Recovery Café Lexington.

Are you interested in self-reliance and helping your neighbors during an emergency? Lexington’s Community Emergency Response Team (CERT) program may be for you!

Seats are still available for the Fall 2026 CERT class. Training begins Thursday, September 3, and runs weekly until October 22. To join, you must be at least 18 years old and live or work in Fayette County.

Dry and pleasant weather continues for today and Wednesday. A few isolated showers/storms are possible late Wednesday night with a better chance of storms on Thursday. Dry weather returns for Friday and through the weekend.
