I think she is a Hero.
It was Monday December 1, 2025 when I received Chrissy Hedrick’s application to volunteer. The next day I called her and we talked about delivering Meals on Wheels, she told me, “I can deliver meals every week, but I won’t be able to start until January because I am going through cancer treatments and won’t be done until early January." I thought that was the last time I would hear from her…but I was wrong. The picture you see was taken in December when amid her stem cell transplants, she came by the Senior Center for her training.
In late January when one of our weekly drivers had to stop delivering, Chrissy said, “I’m done with my treatments and can deliver every week.” For the next 5 weeks Chrissy delivered meals every Tuesday, enjoying her time helping others. Then on Monday March 30 I received a call from her. “I won’t be able to deliver for a while, my bone scan came back and the cancer is in my bones. I’m going to have to have another transplant, and I won’t be able to deliver for a while, but I will call when I am able to deliver again.” Because of what I had seen over the previous few months, I knew she meant it.
I marvel at our volunteers who, even amid their own difficulties, think of others and volunteer to make their lives a little less painful. I call that heroic.
Join the ranks of Heroes, volunteer today by calling 336.474.2646.
