Today, the City held a memorial ceremony on the 20th anniversary of the Comair Flight 5191 tragedy. Council Members joined with the community to remember the 49 lives lost that day. Mayor Linda Gorton, Lt. Governor Jacqueline Coleman, and loved ones of those lost shared their reflections with those gathered at the Arboretum.

Thank you to the brave first responders who served on that tragic day. The hearts of our community remain with those impacted by this loss of life.

The Urban County Council will schedule a Special Committee of the Whole (COW) Meeting to receive public comment and discuss zoning rules and regulations related to data centers. The meeting will be held on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, at 5:30 PM in Council Chambers of the Government Center (200 E. Main Street).

The Urban County Council will receive the Planning Commission’s recommendations on how to update local zoning rules and vote to formally schedule the October 6, 2026, Special COW during its August 25 Work Session. Additionally, staff from the Division of Planning are scheduled to give an informational presentation to the General Government & Planning Committee on September 8, 2026.

Information on the progress of Fayette County’s data center zoning updates is available to the public on the Engage Lexington platform. Residents are encouraged to learn more and submit written feedback by visiting Engage.LexingtonKY.Gov/DataCenters.

Each year the Urban County Council is tasked with setting “ad valorem” tax rates. These are the rates residents pay on their property to help fund schools, general government services, libraries and more. LFUCG receives around 20% of property tax revenue, with the remainder going to Fayette County Public Schools, the state government, and other public entities. Council only sets the rates for its portion of tax bills.

This year, Council has chosen to largely keep the rates the same as 2025, with a small decrease in personal property rates. While the rates did not increase, due to growing property values, there is an estimated 4% increase in revenue for the city.

A public hearing is scheduled for Thursday, August 27, 2026, at 6:00 PM before the final vote is taken at the regularly scheduled Council meeting.

During a recent visit, Council staff toured the Keeneland Library, an internationally recognized research center preserving the history of thoroughbred racing, and explored their newest educational experience, Raíces: The Making of Latino Legacies in Racing.

This initiative highlights the contributions of Latino communities to the thoroughbred racing industry across the globe, including Lexington, from the 1800s to today. The exhibit, which features biographies, photos, memorabilia, trophies, and awards, was funded in part by a 250Lex Grant, which supported numerous projects that showcase Fayette County’s history and expand public access to it.

The exhibit is open to visitors, and the Keeneland Library offers tours for anyone interested in learning more about the people, stories, and archival materials that shape racing’s past and present. The Keeneland Library’s hospitality is deeply appreciated, and community members are encouraged to visit and experience this exhibit themselves.
