UPDATE FROM Lexington-Fayette Animal Care & Control:

🚨 𝗕𝗜𝗚 𝗡𝗘𝗪𝗦 𝗙𝗢𝗥 𝗔𝗡𝗜𝗠𝗔𝗟𝗦 𝗜𝗡 𝗟𝗘𝗫𝗜𝗡𝗚𝗧𝗢𝗡 🚨
Last night, the Lexington Urban County Council unanimously passed updates to the Animal Care Ordinance, sponsored by Councilwoman Emma Curtis.
These changes strengthen protections for animals in our community by:
🐾 Making it illegal to leave pets unattended outdoors during extreme weather conditions.
🐾 Creating a clearer legal process for animals seized in cruelty and neglect investigations. This helps prevent animals from remaining in legal limbo for months—or even years—while criminal cases move through the court system, and shifts the burden of paying for the cost of care from taxpayers to the alleged abuser.
🐾 Allowing a judge, upon resolution of the criminal case, to determine whether an animal should be returned to its owner or awarded to Animal Care and Control.
These updates represent an important step forward in protecting vulnerable animals and improving animal welfare in Lexington.
