Detectives with the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office Criminal Investigation Division and the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office Traffic and Criminal Enforcement Team (TRACE) are working multiple investigations where the offender/offender(s) are breaking into motor vehicles and stealing items from inside the vehicle. The targeted vehicles are being left unlocked by their owners at their homes, and these crimes are taking place in the early morning hours. More than 50 of these vehicle break-ins have taken place in the past three months in the North Davidson area of the County, in neighborhoods.

The Davidson County Sheriff’s Office is offering a $1,000.00 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the offender(s) who are committing these crimes. Please call Detective Swaim with information regarding this investigation. You can also contact the Lexington Area Crimestoppers at (336) 243-2400 with information regarding these vehicle break-ins.

CRIME PREVENTION TIPS-The following is information and tips from Sergeant Azelton who is the supervisor for the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office Crime Prevention Division that may help safeguard against vehicle break-ins and protect your personal information and belongings from vehicle break-ins:

Always lock your vehicle and take your keys with you, even for quick errands.

Don’t leave personal mail or valuables in your car, especially in view.

Keep your garage door opener out of sight, lock it in your dash when the car is parked.

Never leave your vehicle running.

Lock your vehicle’s trunk, hatchback or tailgate.

Close all windows and doors, including vent or wing windows and sunroofs.

Buy—and use—a vehicle alarm. You may think no one notices alarms anymore, but they are effective deterrents to thieves looking for an easy target.

If you have a garage, park and lock your car in it and lock your garage doors. Always lock your car when it’s parked in the driveway.

Park in a well-lit area of your driveway.

Before entering your vehicle, scan the surrounding area, and always check the interior and the floor and rear seat areas.

Install exterior security cameras on your property in view of your vehicles with motion lights.

Always report suspicious activity to law enforcement.

Please contact Sergeant Azelton if you are interested in starting a Community Watch Program in your neighborhood or if you would like to have him conduct a property security assessment of your property. A property security assessment by our Crime Prevention Division is an on-site expert evaluation of your home or business to properly identify security vulnerabilities and recommend security strategies. This is a free service provided by the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office. You can reach Sergeant Azelton at (336) 249-0131.

DAVIDSON COUNTY SHERIFF RICHIE SIMMONS ATTENDS NORTH CAROLINA SHERIFFS’ ASSOCIATION’S 2026 LEGISLATIVE DAY AT GENERAL ASSEMBLY

This week, the North Carolina Sheriffs’ Association hosted sheriffs and their personnel from all corners of the state for their annual Legislative Day at the General Assembly in Raleigh.

Sheriff Simmons of Davidson was proud to be able to attend the event. Commenting on the experience, Sheriff Simmons said, “The decisions being made in Raleigh have a real impact on public safety in our counties, so I am grateful to be able to be the voice of the people of Davidson County when it comes to criminal justice issues. These relationships we build and maintain during each legislative session ensure that we all share a common goal with our legislators of keeping all of our citizens safe.”

Each year while the legislature is in session, sheriffs and their personnel are invited to join North Carolina Sheriffs’ Association staff and lobbyists at the state capital to meet with legislators. This event allows sheriffs the opportunity to meet face to face with lawmakers to discuss public safety and law enforcement issues.

This year, sheriffs discussed with legislators the necessity that the General Assembly enact legislation to keep THC products out of the hands of minors. Sheriffs across the state continue to see children and others suffer serious illness and effects from buying products that are intoxicating in nature from stores that everyone – even children – can access. Sheriffs also discussed a bill related to robocalls. The bill would make it unlawful for someone to call pretending to be a sheriff, or personnel with a law enforcement agency in order to defraud a person for money, a common scam this year in North Carolina.

The sheriffs and their personnel who attended began the day with a meeting with North Carolina Sheriffs’ Association staff before making their way to the General Assembly for their scheduled meetings with their legislators.

North Carolina Sheriffs’ Association President Sheriff Ricky Buchanan of McDowell County was in attendance at Legislative Day and emphasized the importance of sheriffs maintaining positive relationships with lawmakers. “Legislative Day lets us have real, one-on-one conversations with our legislators to let them know what deputies are experiencing in our communities, and what our citizens see as real public safety concerns. It is important for them to hear about the issues directly from the source.”

Davidson County, NC - On May 22, 2026, Deputies with the Davidson County Sheriff’s Office received a report from Wake Forest Baptist Brenner Children's Hospital regarding child abuse after a two-and-a-half-month-old female was brought into the hospital. The child’s father, Dakota Carter, age 20 of Thomasville, had called 911 after the child had reportedly become unresponsive during feeding. Davidson County EMS responded to the home on Old Highway 29, Thomasville, and transported the child to Brenner’s Hospital. Once at the hospital, medical staff reported the child had suffered bleeding on the brain that came from an intentional act.

Detectives with the Criminal Investigation Division responded to the hospital to begin an investigation. Over the course of the investigation, it was determined that the injuries on the child were the result of shaken baby syndrome. Dakota Carter was subsequently charged with one count of felony child abuse inflicting serious bodily injury. Carter received a $200,000.00 secured bond by the magistrate and was placed in the Davidson County Detention Center. He is scheduled to appear in the Davidson County District Court on May 26, 2026.
