Davidson County DSS- Foster Care and Adoption We provide services for children and their families with issues of abuse, neglect, and abandonment.

Foster care is a temporary living arrangement for abused, neglected, and dependent children who need a safe place to live when their parents or another relative cannot take care of them. Often their families face issues such as illness, alcohol or drug addiction, or homelessness. When Social Services believes a child is unsafe in their home, the Agency takes custody with an order from a judge and

finds a foster home for them. The length of stay in foster care varies from a few days to much longer. The foster family, Social Services, and the birth family work together to return children to their own homes as quickly as possible. The Department of Social Services offers Adoption Services to assist children, who would not otherwise have a home of their own, in becoming permanent members of a loving family. These children are, for a variety of reasons, not able to be reunited with their biological families and have been placed in foster care. Adoption provides the children with a permanent family where they can receive love, care, protection, and have opportunities essential for their personal growth and development. Adoptive parents assume all legal rights, obligations, and responsibilities for the child once the adoption is final.
