For almost 4 decades now Tim Jordan’s family carries out a huge cooking event on Christmas Eve, cooking meat for Christmas the old-fashioned way—preparing pork, beef, chicken, and turkey over wood coals. It is a family project—grandchildren use vacation leave to take off work, so they won’t miss the event which is now in its 4th generation and has orders pouring in from friends and family! Tim’s father started the tradition which has become an event, and he and his brother carry on.
But this tradition reaches beyond family, there’s more… As in previous years, Tim loaded up a take-out tray for each of the people on his Meals on Wheels route and took them enough food to last them through the weekend when Meals on Wheels would not be delivered for five days. Predictably, Tim’s family gained more joy and happiness than those they gave the meals to. Meals on Wheels volunteers are the BEST! Do yourself and our homebound seniors a lot of good by volunteering to deliver Meals on Wheels! Call 336.474.2646.

It does not take much…two hours once-a-week or every-other-week, a knock on the door, a warm smile, a cheerful greeting, a listening ear, maybe a hug, a short visit. These are the gifts of life for hundreds of homebound seniors across Davidson County, given out by fellow residents like you who deliver Meals on Wheels as a way of checking on the welfare of homebound senior citizens. Give the gift of life and learn how you can help by calling 336.474.2646 today.

It was a Friday morning in northern Davidson County when volunteers Jerry & Carolyn Redding arrived at Joe’s home…but Joe did not come to the door or answer his phone when they called. The Reddings notified Senior Services, who contacted his son, who went to check on his father. He found his father asleep in the hallway and very confused. The ER hospital staff said it looked like he had a UTI which caused his confusion. Later that day the son called Senior Services staff to give them an update and thank the volunteers for what they did.

Recently the daughter of a Meals on Wheels client told Senior Services that anytime the Meals on Wheels volunteers arrive at her mother's home and she does not come to the door, the volunteers call the daughter to let her know. This daughter was extremely grateful to the volunteers who essentially provide a wellness check every day during the week! Be a life-changer and make a difference in the lives of others--volunteer by calling 336.474.2646.

It was last Friday Oct 17 in Southmont NC when friends and co-volunteers Judy Gibbs and Kathy Frangos were getting the Meals on Wheels containers out of their vehicle and the elderly client appeared on his porch telling them to put the meals back, he was having heart pains and had just called 911! He told them to go on and take care of the other clients, but his words fell on deaf ears. The ladies were on the porch, helping the wobbly gentleman back into his house and into his recliner. Giving them permission to pray for him, he slipped off his hat and bowed his head as they held his hand and prayed with him. Then EMS was there to transport him to the hospital.
Their experience emphasizes the importance of the daily Meals on Wheels visit by volunteers. “The gentleman’s wife just passed away a few months ago, and I thought of what I would want someone to do if that was my dad or husband. We were NOT going to leave him there alone, and we stayed until EMS arrived,” said Kathy.
Be a lifesaver today, volunteer by calling 336.474.2646.

Last Friday when David & Kathy Easter and Kristin Kidd arrived at his home, the elderly Meals on Wheels client was laying on the floor cold, bleeding, and begging for help…but the door was locked. The three volunteers called 911 and Senior Services. When the firemen arrived at the home, they broke the door down and EMS workers moved in and whisked the gentleman to the hospital. Had the three volunteers not found him, he would not have survived the weekend. Three Meals on Wheels volunteers saved another Davidson County life just by showing up with a meal and making two phone calls. Do something great—deliver Meals on Wheels, call 336-474-2646!

FRIENDS CAN DO SO MUCH!
Melonie Rector and Marsha Walters take delivering Meals on Wheels very personally, giving time to each client, delivering treat bags on birthdays, and helping in specific ways when a client’s limitations hinders their well-being—like picking up prescription eyeglasses for a homebound client who could not get them herself, and taking important mail to the mailbox for another. Small kindnesses like this make life so much happier for homebound seniors! You can volunteer too! Call 336.474.2646.

When Emily arrived to deliver Meals on Wheels, her elderly client did not come to the door. Emily could hear her calling out, and looking inside, she saw the lady trying to scoot across the floor toward the door. Emily called 911 and Senior Services, then stayed until EMS arrived and verified she was unhurt. Just showing up with a hot meal may have saved her friend’s life! You can volunteer by calling 336-474-2646 today.

It was not simple for her! Dan & Robin Slabaugh’s Meals on Wheels client had done something wrong and could not put together her new vacuum cleaner. Dan & Robin took 10 minutes of their time and helped her assemble the unit. Their elderly client was so grateful for their help! “Little things” like that are not simple to homebound seniors. Make other’s lives and your own life better by delivering Meals on Wheels! Call 336.474.2646 today.

Volunteering as a family fosters respect for older generations. Children see how small acts, like delivering a warm meal, can bring joy and reduce loneliness. These experiences build character and encourage lifelong habits of kindness, creating meaningful connections and strengthening communities across generations. Deliver Meals on Wheels with your family and impact generations. Call 336.474.2646 today.
