Officers from the Lexington Police Department were honored to participate in the Special Olympics Nebraska Law Enforcement Torch Run in support of the incredible athletes of Special Olympics Nebraska.

The Law Enforcement Torch Run is more than a tradition — it’s a way for law enforcement agencies across the state to come together and help raise awareness, inclusion, and support for athletes with intellectual disabilities.

Thank you to everyone who came out to cheer on the runners and support this amazing cause. We are proud to stand alongside our community and help carry the Flame of Hope for Special Olympics Nebraska

All of us at the Lexington Police Department would like to congratulate Dennis on his retirement and offer a big Thank You Sir for all of your dedication to the Police Department and all of your assistance over the past 20 years. It is all greatly appreciated. Enjoy your retirement Sir, you have earned it.

For 20 years, Dennis Burnside has helped shape the future of Lexington.

As Assistant City Manager, Dennis played a key role in projects and initiatives that improved infrastructure, supported economic development, expanded housing opportunities, strengthened public services, and helped move our community forward.

Throughout his career, Dennis helped secure millions of dollars in grants and development funding benefiting the Lexington community. His work touched nearly every part of city government, including support for the Lexington Public Library, community improvement projects, and public infrastructure initiatives.

Dennis was instrumental in the creation of the Veterans Wall, a lasting tribute honoring those who served our country, and also helped secure grants resulting in the planting of more than 500 trees throughout the community, leaving a legacy future generations will continue to enjoy.

He also brought energy and personality to City events over the years, often serving as the entertainment at employee banquets, retirement parties, and community gatherings with his acting, humor, and performing talents that many employees and friends will long remember.

Dennis served during a period of tremendous growth and progress for Lexington, including the community being recognized as Nebraska’s 2015 Showcase Community.

Beyond the projects and accomplishments, Dennis has been a steady, thoughtful, and dedicated public servant committed to improving the quality of life for the people of Lexington.

Thank you, Dennis Burnside, for 20 years of leadership, professionalism, humor, and service to the City of Lexington.

Congratulations on your retirement, and best wishes to both You and Cheryl in the years ahead.

We believe this article is worth sharing simply due to the rise in the amount of E-bike traffic and calls we are now receiving regarding E-bikes in our community. Definitely worth the quick minute to read.

This morning at approximately 10:19 a.m., officers responded to a crash near 7th Street and Toluca Avenue involving an electric bicycle and a passenger vehicle.

An 11-year-old juvenile on an e-bike entered the roadway and traveled the wrong direction on a one-way street before moving into the path of a vehicle that had the right of way. The driver was not impaired and no charges are anticipated.

The juvenile sustained non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to the hospital.

In the past week alone, officers have contacted or stopped juveniles operating e-bikes on seven separate occasions for reckless behavior involving roadway violations and unsafe riding.

This incident was preventable.

E-bikes are not toys. They must follow traffic laws. Reckless riding puts young riders and others at serious risk.

Parents are urged to take responsibility for knowing where and how their children are riding. Riders are expected to obey the rules of the road at all times.

Police Chief David Leavitt stated: “We are very fortunate this did not end more seriously. These incidents are becoming far too common, and they are preventable with better awareness and supervision.”

🚨 SCAM ALERT – RENTAL FRAUD IN LEXINGTON 🚨

The Lexington Police Department is warning the public about an ongoing rental scam targeting people looking for housing in the Lexington area.

Scammers are pretending to own or manage properties in Lexington that are NOT actually available for rent. Victims are being asked to send deposits, down payments, or application fees using cryptocurrency or peer-to-peer payment apps such as Cash App, Venmo, PayPal, or Zelle.

Once the payment is sent, the victim discovers the property was never for rent and the scammer disappears.

⚠️ Please remember:
• Never send money for a rental property before verifying ownership and seeing the property in person.
• Be cautious if someone pressures you to act quickly or only communicates through text or social media.
• Cryptocurrency and peer-to-peer payments are difficult or impossible to recover once sent.
• If a deal seems too good to be true, it probably is.

Today, the Lexington Police Officers assisted the Lexington Early Learning Academy students with their annual walking day at the Lexington Senior High School track. Officers Hurtado, and Renderos along with SRO Kinney all participated with the kids. As always, what an awesome experience hanging out with our local youth. It is partnerships like those with the Lexington Public Schools and the relationships with our kids that make our jobs worth while.
