Aaron has more structure and gets to live with someone he knows thanks to a fictive kin placement! His CASA volunteer is ensuring his needs continue to be brought before the judge. Aaron is one of hundreds of children who benefited from having a CASA volunteer through CASA of Lexington in 2023.

Hundreds more children will benefit this year, thanks to all the amazing people (like YOU!) who donate and volunteer!

The next training for new CASA volunteers in Lincoln and Garrard counties starts in Lancaster on Jan. 23! You can join the growing number of local community members who are becoming CASA volunteers and helping children in the local family court system.

Classes teach you everything you need to know to serve as a CASA volunteer, including how the court system works, what to expect when visiting with your CASA child, how to talk with adults involved in your CASA child's life, how to write reports for the judge and how to take advantage of all the supports available from your Volunteer Manager.

Once you're sworn in and matched with a local child, it takes just 5-10 hours a month to be a CASA volunteer, and the difference you can make for your CASA child is truly life-changing. If you'd like to sign up for this training, please apply at www.casaoflexington.org/apply.

Who will you be a sparkler for in 2024?

For kids in family court, the world can be scary and overwhelming — like fireworks going off all around you. These kids don't need any more fireworks. They already have plenty of big, impressive people telling them how things are, or where they're going to live next, or why they can't have what they want.

These kids need someone who can get in close, listen to them, and stay with them no matter what else is going on. They need someone to show them a little love and give them a little hope.

If you'd like to be a sparkler for a child in need, you can become a CASA volunteer by joining our next training, starting on Jan. 9. You can see the full schedule of classes at www.casaoflexington.org/training.

CASA of Lexington helps improve outcomes for hundreds of abused and neglected children every year, but that work can't happen without people like you stepping up to make it happen.

Our volunteers create the positive changes in children's lives that are the ultimate goal of everything we do.

Our donors provide funding to train and support our volunteers every step of the way as they create those changes.

And our Friends of CASA help us find volunteers and retain donors so that our work can continue year after year.

If you are one of our volunteers, donors or friends, thank YOU! You are the reason that so many children have brighter futures!

If you aren't involved with CASA, why not make 2024 the year you get involved? There are hundreds of children waiting right now for someone to speak up for their needs, and hundreds more will unfortunately be abused or neglected next year. CASA is your opportunity to change the story for those kids!

The first ever CASA program was developed in Judge David Soukup's courtroom. From there, it spread to other courtrooms, then other states. Today, abused and neglected children benefit from the support and advocacy of CASA volunteers in 49 states. In Kentucky, CASA programs serve 94 of the state's 120 counties, with 15 more counties expected to add CASA programs in the coming year. Thousands of Kentucky children have been helped by CASA volunteers, and none of it would have happened without Judge Soukup's initiative in 1977. We are truly grateful for Judge Soukup's life.

David Soukup, a King County Superior Court judge who came up with the idea to give children court-appointed advocates, died Dec. 16, the day after his 90th birthday, from natural causes.

Children thrive when they have safe, permanent and loving homes. Unfortunately for thousands of children in central Kentucky who have suffered abuse or neglect, they do not feel safe or loved and their lives are constantly changing.

CASA volunteers tell children something they don't often hear — that they matter. They give them hope by showing someone cares and by advocating for real changes that improve their lives.

You can be a part of creating hope and giving children back their homes by supporting CASA's mission! Sign up to be a volunteer advocate, make a donation or become a Friend of CASA today!

Looking for a gift for a little one this December? How about a copy of Oscar's Family? This book was written by CASA of Lexington's own Melynda Jamison and features fantastic art by Lexington resident Matthew Walden! It's great at helping kids understand what life can be like for their peers who are in foster care, and just how many different people are part of your family. The book is available on our website and Amazon!
