We had a great time on December 4th at our Arbor Day event at Batesburg-Leesville Middle School. The event was well attended by the new Mayor of Batesburg-Leesville, a Lexington Three School Board member, the Assistant Superintendent, and the principal of BLMS. Corey was very thankful that we dedicated the tree in his honor and is excited to watch it grow. Commissioner Padget did a wonderful job explaining the importance of Arbor Day in SC and Commissioner Gunter did a phenomenal job going over specifics on the Nuttall Oak and how to effectively take care of it. It may have been a bit chilly, but overall it was an awesome morning!

We are back in our office and just in time too. Our board meeting will be held on Tuesday, November 18th at 4:30 in our office conference room.

Usually we post the notification of our monthly board meeting outside of our office, but it is a federal building and we are not allowed inside at this time.

Our monthly board meeting will be held at 4:30 on Tuesday, October 21 in the meeting room of the Lexington county main library. Our meetings are open to the public.

We had a lot of fun teaching the kids about local animals during our Who's in My Backyard program on Monday. A big thank you to the Chapin Library for inviting us out. Our young attendees got to color animal masks and compare their hands to animal tracks. It was a great day and we're looking forward to February when we host the avian version of the presentation at most of the Lexington County libraries.

We've got another fashion program folks. Our previous Fashion Forward program in Swansea Library had a pretty good turn out so we're at it again, this time at the Cayce-West Columbia Library. Attendees will learn about the importance of conservation, how fashion effects the environment and how to refashion/repurpose old clothes to keep them out of the landfill.

We just had our second Conservation & Creation event and it was a big hit with 17 attendees at the South Congaree-Pine Ridge Library. Similar to our previous event in August the attendees learned about landfills, and the importance of reducing and reusing they things they buy. They also learned how conservation efforts protects wildlife and prevent natural disasters.

When the lesson was over the attendees made, flower garland out of paper towel rolls, and journals and pictures frames out of cardboard and scrape paper.

We're partnering with our friends over at Clemson Extension for a Farm Development workshop series. Our first workshop is October 20th at 1:30pm and covers some of the essentials you need to know before you start a farm. This is the first of what we hope will be a three-part series and we're excited to have a speaker from the Farm Service Agency discuss the different FSA programs.

First Steps to Growing Success introduces new and aspiring farmers to the essentials of starting an agribusiness.
