The Lexington Division of Emergency Management has announced planned activation of Phase 1 of its Extreme Heat Plan. The activation will be in effect beginning at 12 p.m. tomorrow (Tuesday, August 11th) through 6 p.m. on Wednesday (August 12th).

At this stage of activation:
❄️ Partner organizations of the Office of Homelessness Prevention and Intervention will operate as cooling stations

🚍 Lextran will offer free, fixed route rides to identified cooling stations for individuals experiencing homelessness

📢 Outreach teams will be in the community distributing supplies and assisting persons in accessing cooling stations and shaded spaces.

🚨 We Need Your Input! 🚨

The Center for Accessible Living (CAL), through our Kentucky Department for Public Health Epidemiology Grant, is developing Emergency Preparedness Kits to help people with disabilities stay safe during public health emergencies and other health-related disasters—and we need your help!

We're creating two different kits:
🧑 Adult Emergency Preparedness Kit
🧒 Youth Emergency Preparedness Kit

Our goal is to make sure these kits include items that will help individuals prepare for situations such as:
🦠 Disease outbreaks and pandemics
🌡️ Extreme heat or cold
💨 Poor air quality
⚡ Power outages that affect medical equipment
🌪️ Severe weather and other emergencies that can impact health and access to care

💭 What would YOU want included in an emergency preparedness kit?

Some ideas include:
✅ Hand sanitizer and disinfecting wipes
✅ Face masks
✅ Digital thermometer
✅ Basic first aid supplies
✅ Medication list and emergency health information card
✅ Portable phone charger or power bank
✅ Flashlight and batteries
✅ Bottled water and shelf-stable snacks
✅ Cooling towel or emergency blanket
✅ Emergency contact card
✅ Medical supply checklist
✅ Items to help during extended power outages

We know everyone's needs are different, and that's why we want to hear from you!

We are honored to receive a Certificate of Special Congressional Recognition from Congressman Morgan McGarvey in celebration of the Center for Accessible Living's 45th Anniversary. 💙🎉

This recognition celebrates 45 years of advocating for disability rights, promoting independent living, and empowering Kentuckians with disabilities to live life on their own terms.

We are grateful to Congressman McGarvey for recognizing CAL's impact and to everyone who has been part of our journey over the past four and a half decades. This milestone belongs to our staff, board, volunteers, community partners, supporters, and the thousands of individuals we've had the privilege to serve.

Here's to continuing our mission of building a more accessible and inclusive Kentucky for years to come. ♿

Looking to strengthen your household's emergency preparedness? Kentucky State University Cooperative Extension is hosting a series of Listening Sessions to learn more about emergency preparedness needs in Jefferson County.

Sessions are available online and in person, with options in English, Spanish, and ASL. Additional accommodations are also available upon request.

As a thank you for participating, attendees may receive a free disaster preparedness kit and a $50 stipend (with a completed W-9).
