Benchmark Family Services, Inc. was established in 1994 and is a private, faith based, non-profit, therapeutic foster care agency.

Our purpose is to provide stable and caring homes for youth in need of out-of-home care. Our mission is to advocate for children by ensuring opportunities for healthy physical, psychological and emotional growth and development in the most normal and least restrictive setting possible. To this end, Benchmark provides and coordinates programs and services in cooperation with referring child welfare

agencies. Benchmark is committed to the highest standards of childcare and professionalism. Who We Serve...
Benchmark Family Services, Inc. services children who have been removed from their homes by the Department of Childrenโ€™s Services (DCS) due to neglect, physical, sexual, and/or emotional abuse suffered in their biological home. Additionally, some children are under the care of a psychiatrist and receive medications to manage their mental health needs. Why Choose Benchmark? Benchmark provides strong and consistent support to our foster care families. We provide:
Each foster care family with weekly contact with their case manager, including a minimum of two home visits per month
24 hour/7 day a week emergency cell phone access to a case manager in the event of a crisis
Respite care for foster children when needed

Itโ€™s Super Bowl Sunday! ๐Ÿˆ
Whoโ€™re you rooting for?
Check out a few quick facts about kids in foster care & the Super Bowl.

Did you know that: The Allegiant Stadium in Las Vegas holds 65,000 people. Multiplying this by six equals 390,000, which falls short of accommodating the 400,000 kids in care. ๐Ÿคฏ

Now that you know: what can you do?

What is it that we need in order to sustain our attention and perform at our best? We are all different in what it takes to keep our arousal at the best level. Some people canโ€™t cope with any noise while they are trying to think, while others need to have music on constantly. Meeting our arousal needs depends on how we process our sensory information. The important thing to remember is that some people will need more of these sensory inputs to be at the optimum state of arousal and some will need less. We are then able to to โ€œself-regulateโ€ by getting our arousal levels right even when our environment changes. Self-regulating all of the sensory information can be very difficult for a child. Movement is commonly a way that a child will try and regulate so they can calm and focus. Forcing a child to sit still is counter-productive. When we work out what their sensory needs are we can help support them to meet their best arousal.

Do you have a child that people call "sensitive soul"? Or worse, are they labeled as weak, a sook, or wimp? Our culture has presented these children in a negative light as if feeling deeply is a negative attribute to have. When we try to "toughen kids up", we are actually damaging a character trait that that sees, feels and understands things that most people don't. If we nurture and guide these children to understand and develop their sensitive side, what incredible adults they will be.

Sensitive kids aren't weak, they actually are far more aware of what is happening around them than most. They notice changes in their environment, they seem to notice the moods of others more quickly and will be running through every possible scenario in their head before making a decision. Yes these children are more prone to anxiety, but their sensitive nature doesn't have to be a negative trait, they just need help to develop it.

The kids are worth it!

11/27/2023

From October we are inundated with Christmas decorations and festivities. Unfortunately this can have an adverse effect on children who struggle with change and sensory overload. The stress of it all can build up for a child. They may not react straight away and it can show up several days later as difficult behaviour. This behaviour is easy to label as "naughty" or "defiant" but this time of year can just so overwhelming that we need consider the impact on our little people. Blinking lights, glittery objects, sound making trinkets, changes in routine, these can wear down the senses over time without anyone even realizing what it was.

What are you thankful for?

11/20/2023

Good Morning AGP,

For the last few Thursdays, we have been talking about trauma-sensitive approaches in education. All of the literature on childhood trauma cites relationships as the dominant factor in healing. Though relationships in the care giving setting and disturbances in early attachment can be sources of trauma, relationships are also where healing takes place. In the webinar I posted last week, Dr. McArthur said, โ€œEvery positive, attuned interaction with a trustworthy other can help to rewrite the brainโ€. This is not just hopeful thinking, but a researched certainty.

Kids are often blamed for being emotionally dysregulated and partly for good reason. While children's brains are developing, they physically can't manage big emotions. But so often, children are singled out for having emotional melt-downs when parents are completely losing control of their own emotions, too. It's easy to blame the child as we as parents can feel justified in losing control because kids can be so frustrating. Let's face it, nobody can push your buttons like your child. The problem is, if we lose control of our emotions when our kids are out of control, then we set up a culture of dysregulation. Emotions feed off emotions, so if we are going to bring calm, we need to learn to regulate ourselves.

There is more information about this as well as practical strategies in my book "Guidance from The Therapist Parent"
