September is National Preparedness Month, and this year the theme is: Americans Stand Ready. This theme echoes the can-do American spirit of resourcefulness and duty. The campaign will focus on distinct ideas that capture how Americans take pride in their ability to protect themselves and their families and work together to recover from disasters. All month long we will be sharing preparedness tips and activities to help you and your loved ones be better prepared!

The 2026-27 school year is fast approaching! Talk to your students today about school bus safety, and remember S.A.F.E.
Stay at least ten feet — five giant steps — away from the curb.
Always wait until the bus comes to a complete stop and the bus driver signals for you to board.
Face forward after finding a seat on the bus.
Exit the bus after it stops and look left-right-left for cars before crossing a street.

Drivers: Always stop for school buses; its the law!

The outdoor warning sirens will be TESTED today (8/12) at 11 am. This test is a make-up activation from last week that was cancelled due to bad weather.

Hot and humid conditions will persist through at least mid-week. There is a chance a complex of storms may build into northern Missouri Thursday morning with the potential of producing damaging winds.

Due to weather conditions the outdoor warning siren test is POSTPONED for this month (8/5)! We will reschdule for next Wednesday (8/12), weather pending.

You can still practice your personal tornado drill! Talk to your household and co-workers about where you would go in case of an actual tornado!

Emergency Management spent 2 learning filled days in Omaha for the International Association of Emergency Management (IAEM) Region 7 Conference. The speakers gave thought provoking talks, the networking with colleagues was insightful, and we brought back new ideas on how to improve preparedness in Clay County! We're already looking forward to next year.
