IDEM Emergency Disaster Debris Burning Authorized

Under normal circumstances, open burning is prohibited in Porter County except where specifically permitted by applicable law, regulation, or authorization. The Indiana Department of Environmental Management (IDEM) has authorized each individual fire department to make the determination to allow open burning because of the August 11, 2026, storm and derecho that impacted the area. LTVFD will be allowing limited authorization subject to strict conditions designed to protect public safety and reduce the risk of wildfire or uncontrolled fire and facilitate speedy recovery following the storm cleanup.

Residents who choose to conduct an authorized open burn are responsible for complying with all applicable requirements and conditions.

If you see downed power lines, sagging electrical wires, or roadway obstructions, please report them immediately and keep a safe distance.

August 17 Community Update - Severe Storm Response & Recovery

LTVFD continues to monitor conditions throughout our community as recovery efforts from the August 11 severe storm and derecho continue.

Department leadership has remained in contact with the Highway Department regarding road conditions and ongoing debris removal efforts. LTVFD is coordinating with the Highway Department to help ensure emergency response routes remain clear and accessible for fire, rescue, and other emergency operations.

Residents are asked to avoid these areas and not attempt to drive around barricades or through areas that have been identified as unsafe or impassable.

The current plan is to have all roads made passable by Friday, August 21, weather and conditions permitting.

We appreciate the continued patience and cooperation of our community members as recovery efforts continue.

Weather Briefing Report Friday Night into Saturday Morning 8/14/2026-8/15/2026

The latest weather report for the area expected; Significant Flooding Risk, especially along and south of Interstate 80. Another round of thunderstorms is expected tonight. Torrential rain rates may lead to widespread flash flooding. In addition, to locally damaging winds.

Please remember to turn around where roads are flooded and seek alternate routes. Ditch lines along roads may rise rapidly and create flash floods.

An Update from Kankakee Valley REMC as of 8/14/2026 | 7:41 PM

KV REMC members in the Jackson Township area who recently had their power restored may be experiencing blinking lights.

The West Toll Substation is still not energized, and our crews are working to serve the area through other substations. Because this is an unusual situation, adjustments need to be made to the load settings on the substation equipment.

Members who have had power restored for the past day may experience another brief interruption while these adjustments are made. Again, this is only temporary as we work through the equipment settings.

Residents needing showers are available, but you must call ahead and make an appointment.
