We are incredibly proud to see Clay County’s history represented on a regional stage in the 2026 Parade of Hearts. Retired Liberty art teacher Wendy Sohm debuted her breathtaking sculpture, "Hopes & Struggles," at today’s "150 United" exhibition in Overland Park.

Tracing a visual timeline from the roots of slavery through the Civil Rights movement, her intricately detailed depiction, anchored by rusty, broken chains entangled in roots at its base, is a beautiful tribute to resilience, the enduring roles of faith and music, and the ongoing hope for the future.

Wendy’s work is part of a 150-heart collection that also features "KC N Tees" by her fellow retired Liberty art teacher colleague, Anne Deaver. These sculptures will be deployed across the metro starting Monday. Be sure to download the Parade of Hearts app next week to find these local masterpieces around the KC region.

We’re excited to share a look at just how far the hearts will stretch this year.

Our public art initiative connects two states and more than 60 cities, creating our largest footprint yet. Since launching in 2022, our goal has been to erase invisible boundaries across the Heartland by bringing communities together on both sides of the state line — including towns that don’t always feel part of the regional conversation.

Stay tuned — interactive maps are coming soon!
