Here’s a look from last week, facing west from the center of the new roundabout. The project is really starting to take shape, and it’s starting to look like a roundabout!

The contractor has recently been pouring concrete for the curb, sidewalk and truck apron. The first two layers of pavement are expected to be placed soon. In the coming weeks, crews will also resume installing underground infrastructure for the new street lighting.

The project remains on schedule, with the new roundabout expected to open to traffic in October.

𝗥𝘂𝘀𝘀𝗲𝗹𝗹 𝗥𝗼𝗮𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗖𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗮𝘁 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗣𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰 𝗥𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝗖𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 (𝗔𝘂𝗴 𝟮𝟰-𝟮𝟴)

The Canadian Pacific Railway will close the railroad crossing on Russell Road for repairs. The closure of the crossing will begin at 6 a.m. on Monday, August 24. The road is scheduled to reopen during the late afternoon on Friday, August 28.

Detour Route: Kilbourne Road to IL 173 to US 41

Local traffic will be allowed from Kilbourne Road west to the railroad crossing and from US 41 east to the railroad crossing. The railroad crossing will be closed to all traffic.

Over the next few weeks, LCDOT’s herbicide contractor will be applying herbicide around guardrails, fences, curbing and paved medians along County-maintained roads and paths.

If you see a flag in the ground, it indicates that herbicide was applied in that area.

Herbicides are one of several methods LCDOT uses to manage roadside vegetation, and we make a conscious effort to limit their use. All contractors applying herbicides on County right-of-way are required to maintain a license issued by the Illinois Department of Agriculture.

There it is. The new roundabout at Deep Lake Road and Depot Street officially opened to traffic on Friday, August 14, ahead of schedule!

This is the first of two planned roundabouts along Deep Lake Road. A second roundabout is planned for North Avenue in a future construction season as part of a multi-year effort to modernize the Deep Lake Road corridor.

More than 11,000 roundabouts have been installed across the United States. This one is the 13th roundabout maintained by LCDOT.

It's been a while since we checked in on the Washington Street Path Project, and construction is moving along nicely!

The project includes new sidewalks on Washington Street from Sextant Drive to Mainsail Drive and from Tangueray Drive to Almond Road, along with a new bike path connecting Mainsail Drive to US 45 and continuing from US 45 to Almond Road.

The first round of paving is scheduled to begin in a few weeks. Once the retaining wall east of US 45 is complete, the paving contractor will return to finish the remaining 1,200 feet of bike path. The project remains on schedule for substantial completion this fall.

𝗪𝗮𝗱𝘀𝘄𝗼𝗿𝘁𝗵 𝗥𝗼𝗮𝗱 𝘁𝗼 𝗖𝗹𝗼𝘀𝗲 𝗮𝘁 𝗖𝗮𝗻𝗮𝗱𝗶𝗮𝗻 𝗣𝗮𝗰𝗶𝗳𝗶𝗰 𝗥𝗮𝗶𝗹𝘄𝗮𝘆 𝗖𝗿𝗼𝘀𝘀𝗶𝗻𝗴 (𝗔𝘂𝗴 𝟭𝟳-𝟮𝟭)

The Canadian Pacific Railway will close the railroad crossing on Wadsworth Road, east of the Des Plaines River, to replace the crossing. The closure will begin at 6 a.m. Monday, August 17. The road will reopen to traffic by late afternoon on Friday, August 21.

Detour Route: US Route 41 (Skokie Highway) to IL 173 (Rosecrans Road) to Kilbourne Road. Local traffic will be allowed from US Route 41 to the railroad crossing and from Kilbourne Road to the crossing. The railroad crossing will be closed to all traffic.

The Canadian National Railway has informed the Lake County Division of Transportation that it will now be closing the railroad crossing on Peterson Road, west of US Route 45, for crossing repairs from August 25 to September 2. Previously, the crossing was scheduled to close starting on August 10.

UPDATED DETOUR ROUTE: Midlothian to IL 137 to US Route 45. Local traffic will be allowed from Midlothian Road to Franklin Boulevard and from US Route 45 to Industrial Drive.

Last night was a busy one for LCDOT crews.

Around 8:30 p.m., a large tree came down across Monaville Road just east of Route 59, blocking the road.

This wasn't a simple cleanup job. Because of the size of the tree and the way it was hung up, crews had to bring in a chipper and skid loader to get the job done safely. Before anyone could start cutting it up, crews made a series of strategic cuts to bring the tree safely to the ground.

It's the kind of work our crews train for, and thanks to their experience and the right equipment, Monaville Road was safely cleared and reopened.

A big thank you to the Lake County IL Sheriff's Office for helping with traffic control while our crews worked.

We're studying the intersection of 𝗥𝗼𝗹𝗹𝗶𝗻𝘀 𝗥𝗼𝗮𝗱 𝗮𝘁 𝗪𝗶𝗹𝘀𝗼𝗻 𝗥𝗼𝗮𝗱 to identify ways to improve safety, improve traffic operations, and make it easier and safer to walk and bike through the area.

This intersection was identified in the 2025 Lake County Safety Action Plan after crashes resulted in serious injuries, including crashes involving pedestrians and bicyclists. Before any improvements are considered, we want to hear from those who use it every day.
