🌺For this year’s fashion show, we are trying something new, and it’s all about pūpū lei - lei made with shells.
🐚Our goal is to highlight the ancient craftsmanship of our Pupu Lei from Ni’ihau and Kaua’i, along with Hawaii-designed fashion from the past and today. Anyone attending the Muumu’u Paina, is eligible and encouraged to join the Contest.
- Contestants can wear any Muumuu or Aloha Shirt of their choice, paired with either Pupu Niihau or Kaua’i Lei or one Pupu Lei Po’o (hat lei).
- Contestants will be judged only on one Lei or one Papale Lei each (no layering)
- There will be a category for Muumuu and a category for Aloha Shirts. And we want to see how you style the Mu’u/aloha shirt with the pūpū.
✨Contestants, we want to learn about your lei. What’s the story behind how it came to you? Do you know the maker? What kind of shells are used in the lei?
🏆The prizes are VERY good. They include cash, gift certificates, and more! If you already have tickets to the Muumu’u Paina we will send you the entry form to complete with no entry fee. We have a limited number of entries.
To participate in the contest, please send an email to [email protected].

Since 1988, Kokee Museum - Hui o Laka has hosted “Eō e Emalani i Alaka‘i” to commemorate a historic event honoring Queen Emma’s visit to Kōke‘e and Alaka‘i Swamp. Each year people are chosen to represent Queen Emma, her guide Kaluahi, and attendants. Invited hālau honor Queen Emma’s journey with dances and chants. Led by an old mountain guide, Kaluahi, Queen Emma spent two days in January of 1871 with a band of almost one hundred, including dancers and poets along with friends and admirers. Ever after, Queen Emma was known as “Kaleleonālani, traveler of the mountains.”

This year, the 36th annual Emalani Festival takes place Saturday, November 2, 2024 in Kōke’e, from 9:00pm to 3:00pm. There willl be tents with lei making, exhibits, and food surrounding the performance. Hawaiian music begins at 9:00am. Central to the Festival is the arrival of Queen Emma, her attendant, and guide Kaluahi on horseback at 10:00am.

Preserving the culture and histories of Niʻihau and Kauaʻi!

For over 100 years the Kaua’i Historical Society has actively collected, preserved, and provided access to Kaua’i and Ni’ihau’s oral, written, and pictorial history curating the largest collection of the islands’ historical records, photographs, and manuscripts. Access to the collections covering ancient through modern times is complimented by our educational outreach programming and publications.
