The fire department would like to send our condolences to one of fellow firefighters for the passing of his Grandfather. Mr. Ponder will be missed, he helped the fire department when he could.

When 911 was first being established in New Madrid County, he assisted with making sure the addresses at the time were correct in the city of Lilbourn. Also at the time prior to the County Wide Ambulance Coverage, the Ponders assisted with some medical calls by transporting patients in the only thing they had back then, a hearse.

The Ponders were also in charge of sounding the town’s siren located in the park. Prior to fire department pagers and smart phones, the siren was the only way to notify the firefighters of a fire.

Rest Easy Dee, we have it from here.

Harold H. Ponder, 91, of Lilbourn, MO, passed away on October 7, 2023 at the Barathaven Alzheimers Special Care Center in Dardenne Prairie, MO. He was born December 17, 1931 in St. Louis, MO to the late Homer Lee and Grace Evelyn Hulbert Ponder. In addition to his parents he

You can turn this sucker off.

Our Chief is right, all the fire departments in the county need help. We’ve heard all the excuses. I can’t commit to (fill in the blank), I’m not always available, I’m too young/old, I don’t know anything about it. They are just excuses. We are all volunteers. We can when we can and we can’t when we can’t.

This is an incredible job you get paid for in ways that aren’t money. If you’ve ever thought about it, contact the VFD in your area. The hardest part, is walking through that station door the first time.

We all live in the communities we serve. How can you make a difference?

Every fire department across the country needs help.

Thoughts and Prayers go out to the Rittenberry Family and CFD.

Today we were informed of the passing of one of our former firefighters, Billy Gene Rittenberry #725. Billy served as an Engineer on the CFD from 1991-2002. Billy was one of the good ones, always happy and smiling. He loved his job. Our thoughts, prayers, and condolences go out to all of his family and friends. We will always remember Billy for the kind and gentle man that he was.
