🌼 Harnett County Master Gardeners and Community Volunteers in Action 🌼

This morning, Harnett County Master Gardeners and dedicated community volunteers came together to make a positive impact in our gardens! It was a wonderful day filled with teamwork and enthusiasm as we rolled up our sleeves to enhance our green spaces.

Throughout the gardens, volunteers engaged in various tasks, from weeding to ensure our plants flourish, to harvesting fresh vegetables that will benefit our community. We also took the opportunity to plan exciting new designs for the seasons ahead, sharing creative ideas to make our gardens even more inviting.

Additionally, many volunteers contributed by deadheading, helping our flowers remain vibrant and encouraging new blooms. The spirit of camaraderie and shared purpose was great, making the day truly special.

A heartfelt thank you to all the Master Gardeners and community volunteers who devoted their time and effort. Together, we are cultivating not just plants but also a strong community spirit. 🌱❤️

We look forward to our next work day and continuing to nurture the beauty of our gardens! 🌿✨

The Eastern Bluebird's comeback story is one I never get tired of telling. 💙

By the 1960s and 70s, bluebird populations had crashed across huge parts of their range. Starlings and House Sparrows — both introduced from Europe — were outcompeting them for every available tree cavity.

And then ordinary people started putting up nest boxes.

Not scientists. Not government programs (though those helped too). Neighbors. Farmers. Backyard birders.

A network of nest box trails spread across the continent. The North American Bluebird Society formed. Millions of boxes went up.

The bluebird came back.

If you have a bluebird box up right now, you are part of that story. Don't ever underestimate what a single nest box can do. 🏡

What are some potential clues of a potential harmful algal bloom? Blue-green algae can look like spilled blue or green paint on the water, a floating mat, or scums along shorelines. Another clue is a foul odor.

Testing and analysis are required to confirm the presence of algae that can produce toxins.

Report a bloom online or call your Division of Water Resources regional office.
