The State of North Carolina identified during a recent facility compliance inspection that some of our Animal Shelter staff were performing euthanasia procedures that did not comply with the state-required procedures and documentation standards. At this time, no euthanasia will be performed by county staff until retraining occurs and our staff members are able to perform these procedures again and comply with the state-required documentation and procedure standards. All staff members within the Animal Shelter receive training by external veterinarians and are certified euthanasia technicians. We apologize to our community and take these matters seriously. Harnett County is committed to the utmost importance of ensuring humane treatment and care in all animals within our possession. We will ensure that all staff receive the appropriate training and follow the correct processes going forward. Harnett County has already began working on the improvements outlined in the document from the state.
