ALA is heartbroken at the passing of country music legend, cultural icon, and champion of literacy Dolly Parton.

Dolly’s award-winning Imagination Library initiative, inspired by her father’s inability to read or write, has put hundreds of millions of free books into the hands of children across America and was considered by her to be one of her greatest achievements.

“We’re giving books to kids who wouldn’t have a chance to get them otherwise,” she told American Libraries in a 2018 interview. “A lot of people think this is just for poor children—it’s for all children. It’s important to get books into the hands of any child that we can.”

ALA was proud to confer Dolly with an honorary lifetime membership, the Association’s highest honor, in 2023 for her lasting impact on librarianship, libraries, and the communities they serve.

Dolly was also part of ALA’s Celebrity READ campaign, in which she holds a copy of 'The Little Engine That Could.'

“I’ve always related to that book because I’m the little engine that did!” she said.

Isn't it though? The Book Sale is open today from 10 to 2 (Monday, August 24). It's a beautiful day, warm enough to sit on the deck with a cold drink and a good read (the Book Sale is OPEN today). With any luck your end of summer visitors have gone home and you're enjoying a little down time (have we mentioned that the Book Sale is open??). Come see us and then have a lovely afternoon!

One of the odd things about living at the beach is that we tend to travel in the off season. Are you planning a trip this winter? Have you been reading anything to prep for the trip? I'm off to the east coast for a wedding in September so I just read The Wedding People by Alison Espach. Good read but I'm hoping for a better outcome for my wedding couple.

Our fiction shelves are packed with books to inspire or inform your travel and our travel section can help with planning. We're open at the Book Sale from 10 to 2 today, August 17.

As a purveyor of used books, we have feelings about this chart. Avoid chaos for sure.

We’re open at the Book Sale this Monday, May 18 from 10 to 2 but we’d like to remind you that we and the library and city hall will be closed for Memorial Day on May 25. So…you should be sure to come see us this week 😉
