Dr. Brian Maher Selected as Commissioner of Education

The State Board of Education has selected Dr. Brian Maher as the next Nebraska Commissioner of Education. The decision comes after a nationwide search process that included staff and stakeholder input and interviews with three finalists led by search firm McPherson and Jacobson. Dr. Maher will replace Dr. Matthew Blomstedt who served nine years as commissioner until his resignation in January.

Dr. Maher is currently the CEO and Executive Director of the South Dakota Board of Regents. In that role, Dr. Maher successfully completed a system-wide review of the Board of Regents. This was a statewide review that lasted more than a year and culminated with a report to the Legislature and the Governor. Dr. Maher also lobbied the 2-house legislature for historic funding during the 2021 and 2022 legislative sessions for public higher education in South Dakota and led an effort to have no increase in tuition for public higher education institutions in the 2022 and 2023 legislative sessions. Dr. Maher also led a 25,000-student school system during the beginning stages of a worldwide health pandemic.

Dr. Maher previously served as superintendent at Sioux Falls Public Schools in South Dakota and at Kearney and Centennial Public Schools in Nebraska. As a superintendent, he successfully led four successful bond referendums in three different school districts and a successful levy override for more local revenue. Dr. Maher was also an administrator at Waverly, Elkhorn, and Johnson-Brock Public Schools and a teacher at Elkhorn and Clarks Public Schools.
Dr. Maher received a Bachelor’s degree in Mathematics Education at Midland Lutheran College before he went on to earn his Master’s and Educational Doctorate in Education Administration from the University of Nebraska.

Dr. Maher is expected to start as commissioner in July.

Katherine Williamson Retirement Celebration Reception

After many years of dedicated service, our very own Katherine Williamson (NDE OSE Support Staff Associate) has ignored our team's playful "stay-put" order and announced that she will be leaving the nest to enjoy her well-earned retirement!

Please join us in wishing her farewell at her retirement reception being held on Friday, April 7, from 1:00 p.m. - 3:00 p.m. CST at the NDE Office second-floor Atrium. (500 S. 84th St., Lincoln, NE 68510).

We are certainly sad to see her go but know her days ahead will be full of adventure, competitive game nights, and relaxing with family, and friends, and thus, we wish her all the best in this new round of "LIFE"! Thank you, Katherine, for all you have done for us, and most importantly the students of Nebraska!

Katherine's last day in the office will be Wed, April 12th. and she and her family will then be relocating to New York state.

Today’s release of the revised 2023 NeMTSS Framework (https://nemtss.unl.edu/.../2018/08/23-NeMTSS_Framework.pdf) marks an exciting moment in Nebraska’s efforts to ensure that all students have the support necessary to meet their academic, social, emotional, behavioral, physical, and environmental needs.

Nebraska's Multi-tiered System of Support (NeMTSS) is a framework designed to ensure each and every student has access to learning experiences that enhance their educational outcomes.
In the spirit of continuous improvement, the Offices of Teaching, Learning, and Assessment; Special Education; Coordinated Student Support Services; and Coordinated School and District Support at NDE undertook an effort to align, define, and streamline key workstreams to offer schools and districts a coherent model for student support.

We engaged stakeholders throughout this effort. Their feedback indicated a lack of coherence and that improved connections could be made between key workstreams of NeMTSS, HQIM, SEL, whole child, school improvement, and continuous improvement processes. Through this feedback, it was evident a revision of the current NeMTSS framework would allow for improved clarity and coherence across the workstreams.

In the 2023 NeMTSS Framework you’ll find a few key revisions:
• Streamlined four essential elements: Infrastructure and Shared Leadership, Layered Continuum of Supports. Data-Based Decision-Making, and Collaboration, and Communication.
• Focus on the importance of strong tier I as the foundation for strong learning and the starting point for a strong NeMTSS program.
• Creation of a shared glossary to allow for consistent language use across the offices of Teaching, Learning, and Assessment, Coordinated School and District Support, Coordinated Student Support Services, and Special Education.
• Revision of the problem-solving model to a 5-step problem-solving model to better align with the continuous improvement framework and activities across offices.
• Inclusion of a section to highlight how NeMTSS aligns with rule and other state processes.
• Addition of specific implementation resources, such as information on the composition and routines of shared leadership teams and examples of the four data types used to guide data-based decision-making.

Across the next six months, we will continue to align all tools and training to the shared glossary and use the NeMTSS to frame projects and initiatives and connect the dots. Trainings on NeMTSS will reflect the revised framework starting in Summer 2023, and more information on the revised framework can be found on the NeMTSS website (https://nemtss.unl.edu/).

In addition:
- visit the attached FAQ to learn more about NeMTSS
- watch the Coherence Video at: https://vimeo.com/793929187

The revised framework and supporting materials are just some of the many resources you have to look forward to in 2023 as each and every one of us here at NDE are committed to Coherence at Every Level!
