Lunch is served Mondays at Firth Senior Center (311 Nemaha St., Firth), Tuesdays and Thursdays at Bennet Senior Center (American Legion Hall, 970 Monroe St., Bennet) and Wednesdays at Hickman Senior Center (Community Center, 115 Locust St., Hickman)

Financial exploitation is one of the most common—and fastest-growing—forms of elder abuse, but it can be prevented with the right tools. Because June is Elder Abuse Awareness Month, it’s the perfect time to equip ourselves and the older adults in our lives with the knowledge to recognize and stop financial scams.

Protecting your savings and identity starts with a few practical steps:
🛑 Be direct: Don’t hesitate to hang up on unwanted solicitations or delete unexpected text messages.
🛑 Slow down: Scammers thrive on manufacturing fake emergencies (like the "grandparent scam" or urgent lottery claims). Always pause and verify the story before acting.
🚫 Protect your data: Never pay anyone via wire transfers, gift cards, or cryptocurrency if they reach out unsolicited. Shred old bank statements, receipts, and pre-approved credit offers.

As a third-generation tuba player and dedicated music educator, Koopmann has established himself as a prolific musician by performing across North America and recording with dozens of prominent polka, brass and orchestra ensembles.

June 15 is Elder Abuse Awareness Day. When it comes to protecting older adults, awareness is key. Elder abuse isn't always physical; it can also be emotional, financial, or take the form of neglect.

Because many older adults may hesitate to speak up out of fear or embarrassment, it is up to friends, family, and neighbors to recognize when something is wrong. Changes in behavior, unexplained financial transactions, or sudden social withdrawal are all indicators that someone might need assistance.

There's still time to sign up for the BikeLNK bike share program introductory class on Monday, June 15, from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.

Learn about the BikeLNK program and how to check out bikes. Electric bikes, conventional bikes and helmets are provided at no change. Riders will have the opportunity to take a group ride on the beautiful trails around Innovation Campus.

A heat advisory has been issued for Lincoln and Lancaster County from 1 to 9 p.m. Tuesday, June 9. Heat index values up to 107 degrees are possible. These conditions increase the risk of heat-related illness and may worsen underlying health conditions, particularly among vulnerable populations.

June is recognized globally as Elder Abuse Awareness Month—a dedicated time to voice our support for the older adults in our communities and shine a light on an issue that often goes unnoticed.

While the conversation spans the entire month, the focal point is World Elder Abuse Awareness Day on June 15. Elder abuse can take many forms, including physical, emotional, sexual, financial abuse and neglect. By educating ourselves on how to spot the signs, we can build a safer, more supportive environment for everyone as they age.
