Our theme this year is Honoring the Past, Shaping the Future.

The morning portion of the conference will feature authors and contributors from Roots of Justice: A History of Race and Racism in Nebraska, exploring important chapters of Nebraska's history and the experiences of communities that have often been overlooked.

The afternoon will feature three workshops connected to the three priority areas of Nebraskans for Peace: Anti-War “Civil Dialogue as a Tool for Peacebuilding” Presented by Mikaela VanMoorleghem, Social Justice “Voting: A Right for All, Accessible to Some, Impactful for All” Presented by Rachel Gibson, and Environment “AI, Datacenters, and Energy Democracy” Presented by Ryan Wishart.

Troops fighting against Iran and alleged drug smugglers say they are being asked to violate international law

No “shock gloves” against immigrants or students in Nebraska!

Earlier this week, NPR did a piece on ICE purchasing “shock gloves” to use on immigrants and American citizens (see, https://www.npr.org/2026/08/12/nx-s1-5929545/ice-buys-electric-shock-gloves), which is horrific enough. But, buried in that piece was also this “shocking” line:

“The glove technology has been around for less than a decade, but it is already used in a variety of settings, including schools. At least one city — Omaha, Neb. — has purchased the devices for its public schools, though it's unclear whether it is actively being used.”

Not surprisingly, that has set off a public firestorm less than a week before school begins.

And, it gets worse. Turns out, the Omaha Police Department deployed these instruments of pain and control to local middle and high schools a year ago without informing the school board, parents, or the public. The previous Republican mayor, Jean Stothert, apparently signed off on it shortly before leaving office, avoiding any responsibility for the decision. Now in crisis response mode, OPD did a completely disingenuous demonstration of the gloves yesterday. The whole thing is a complete sh*t-show on just about every level.

If you have a middle or high school student, contact the principal of your child’s school. Tell them NO to “shock gloves” in OPS.

The EPA hasn’t reevaluated its cleanup guidelines for homes in a residential Superfund site in Omaha, Nebraska, in 17 years, despite research showing that even small amounts of lead can cause IQ loss in children and heart attacks in adults.
