The numbers are in, and they confirm what many local renters are feeling: buying a home has never been more out of reach. 🏠📉
According to Harvard’s latest housing report, potential buyers are facing severe financial hurdles from all sides:
- Rising monthly costs: High interest rates and home prices have pushed average monthly payments up to $3,120.
- Massive income requirements: Buyers now need an annual income of $120,800 to afford a median-priced home, and only 16% of renter households meet that threshold.
- The upfront cash barrier: Renter households have a median savings of $1,810, while upfront down payment and closing costs can easily exceed $14,000.
The report’s biggest takeaway? Without dedicated community support and local resources, achieving homeownership is nearly impossible for many working families right now.
How NeighborWorks Lincoln is stepping up:
We see these challenges every day, but we refuse to let our neighbors navigate this market alone.
Here is how we’re breaking down those barriers:
🌱 Down payment assistance: Connecting qualified buyers with funds to bridge the upfront cash gap.
🏡 Prairie Roots Community Land Trust: Locking in long-term affordability and lowering initial purchase prices on new homes.
📚 1-on-1 coaching and homebuyer education: Helping buyers navigate the homebuying process, receive credit coaching, and learn how to budget.
Affordable homeownership is the backbone of a thriving community, and we are doing the work on the ground every day to keep that dream alive in Lincoln. ❤️🔑
