💧 Staying healthy in the field is just as important as getting the job done.
Long days on site can take a toll, but a few simple habits help keep wastewater professionals safe, focused, and ready for the next job.

Here are some practical ways to take care of yourself during long fieldwork days:

✔ Stay Hydrated
Bring more water than you think you need. Cold weather, hot weather, and long hours all increase hydration needs.

✔ Protect Your Body
Use proper lifting techniques, adjust your stance often, and take short stretch breaks to prevent strain and fatigue.

✔ Fuel Up
Pack high-protein snacks and balanced meals to keep your energy steady throughout the day.

✔ Prioritize PPE
Gloves, eye protection, hearing protection, and sturdy boots help prevent injuries and keep you safe in unpredictable environments.

✔ Pace Yourself
Work efficiently, not rushed. Steady movement and mindful breaks reduce mistakes and physical wear.

Taking care of wastewater systems starts with taking care of yourself.

At the request of the NOWWA Board of Directors, we have added a new members-only feature to the NOWWA website. Once you log in and go to your profile page, look under bookmarks for "Anonymous Report". If you know of any illegal or failing systems out there and want to report them but do not feel comfortable contacting the state, fill out the form; it will be sent to us anonymously, and we will then submit it to the state for review. The Association will not know who submitted the form.

Just so you know, this feature is only available to full-paying members.

If you have any questions, please let us know.

"Stay in school, or you’ll end up like him."

This is what a teacher told her elementary school class as they walked past my dad, who was in the middle of pumping out their lift station. The pumps had burned up, and my dad and his pump truck were the only things preventing sewage from overflowing. The pumps were on backorder, so my dad ended up babysitting that lift station for about six weeks. In those 6 weeks, my dad made about $36,000, which would have taken that teacher 32 weeks to earn. You might not want to be so quick to judge people, especially if they’re out there trying to make an honest living.
