City of Lincoln, Illinois This is the official page for the City of Lincoln, Illinois. It is the first city named after Abraham Lincoln.

Our city has a rich heritage dating back to its formation in 1853 when Abraham Lincoln christened the town by using watermelon juice from a nearby wagon load of melons. The City of Lincoln was named after the young lawyer from
Springfield who drafted the plans for the town. Abraham christened his namesake City with the juice of a watermelon.

Beginning Monday, September 14th, Tremont Street, between Union and Logan Streets, will be closed. Traffic will be one way moving eastbound ONLY. We ask that you avoid this area and choose alternate routes whenever possible.

Tremont Street Reconstruction Project to get underway

Beginning Thursday, August 13, 2026, traffic control devices will begin to be placed along Tremont Street and adjacent streets from Union Street to Logan Street.

The first phase of the project will be tree removal and will begin on Monday, August 17, 2026. There will be temporary no parking signs placed and daily street closures will take place as needed to allow for the tree removal. Soon after this work, contractors will begin removing storm sewers along with curb, sidewalk and pavement.

Closed intersections – 4th/Union/S. Logan/Decatur & Logan/Pulaski

🚧 The intersection of 4th/Union/S. Logan/Decatur will be closed beginning on Monday, August 10th at 8am for utility patches.

🚧 The intersection of Logan/Pulaski will also be closed beginning on Monday, August 10th at 8am for water line repairs.

🛑 Detour signage will be in place at both locations.
