Our neighbors, Upper Pemigewasset Historical Society are hosting this amazing program this evening, you don’t want to miss it! For a limited time you have the opportunity to view this piece of history on exhibit.

Tonight at 7:00 pm, we’ll gather at the Upper Pemigewasset Historical Society for a very special evening with local art researcher and collector Benjamin Clark and a painting that has, in its own way, been waiting a very long time to come home.

The presentation, "Lost for Decades, Found by Chance: A White Mountain Artist’s Masterpiece Returns," tells the story of "Valley of the Pemigewasset," a monumental 37" × 56" oil painting created 125 years ago by Professor J. Warren Thyng.

The painting depicts the Pemigewasset River, Franconia Notch, and the 1878 “Old Lattice” Covered Bridge as they appeared from Woodstock—a landscape familiar to us, yet captured at a very different moment in time.

For decades, the painting was out of public view. Then, quite by chance, it was discovered in a dusty attic near Cleveland, Ohio, by an estate picker. Now, thanks to a generous loan, it has found its way back to the Upper Pemigewasset region.

Tonight, Ben will share the story of the painting, the artists who helped shape our understanding of the White Mountains, and the remarkable journey that brought this particular work back into the light. We’ll also have the opportunity to see "Valley of the Pemigewasset" unveiled for the first time at the UPHS.

We’d love to have you with us.

FYI… what has your experience been with utilizing ILL (Interlibrary Loan) from your library?
Many people don't realize that libraries across New Hampshire rely on a statewide interlibrary loan (ILL) delivery service to share books, DVDs, audiobooks, and other materials. Every day, the New Hampshire State Library's delivery vans transport thousands of books and other library materials between public, school, and academic libraries across the state. This service makes it possible for everyone from the North Country to the Seacoast to access materials their local library doesn't own. If the Lincoln Public Library has ever ordered a book from another library for you, chances are it arrived on one of these delivery vans.

Right now, the New Hampshire State Library is experiencing staffing challenges due to the current statewide hiring freeze. While their dedicated staff continue to keep the delivery system running, vacancies are making it more difficult to maintain the level of service libraries and patrons have come to expect.

The dedicated employees at the State Library continue to do incredible work, but they can't replace vacant positions indefinitely. Today, Mindy Atwood, Assistant State Librarian and Administrator of Library Operations at the NH State Library, is personally driving the North Country delivery route to ensure that New Hampshire residents can still access the information they are seeking during this service disruption.

Interlibrary loan isn't a luxury, it’s a lifeline for students, educators, job seekers, researchers, and readers across New Hampshire. It is one of those services that often goes unnoticed until you need it. ILL connects libraries of every size, expands access to information, and helps ensure that everyone in New Hampshire can borrow materials beyond what's available on their local shelves. No one library could possibly hold all of the materials that patrons may be seeking.

If you've been waiting longer than usual for a requested item, we sincerely apologize for the delay. We hope this provides some insight into why it may be taking longer than expected, and we appreciate your patience and understanding as librarians all over New Hampshire continue working hard to keep materials moving around the state.
