Despite cooler temperatures and recent moisture, wildfire remains a concern across Nebraska this Friday, Oct. 23. According to the National Weather Service, portions of western and north-central Nebraska are experiencing high to very high rangeland fire danger this afternoon, particularly near Sidney, Mullen, and Valentine.

Elevated fire weather concerns are possible Friday, specifically west of Highway 61, with 30-40 mph wind gusts across the state today through Saturday. Despite recent moisture and cooler temperatures, wildfire danger remains across Nebraska. As grasses go dormant and dry out, standing dead vegetation provides plenty of fuel for a wildfire to ignite and spread, especially during windy conditions. October is still Fire Prevention Month, so hunters are reminded to stay vigilant. Check fire danger before heading out, park vehicles away from dry grass and be mindful of potential ignition sources. Governor Jim Pillen has signed an executive order establishing the Statewide Public Safety Communications Task Force to improve emergency communications statewide.

Led by the Nebraska Military Department, the task force will identify gaps in radio coverage, equipment, and training to help ensure first responders—including rural volunteer firefighters—can communicate reliably when lives are on the line.

The task force will deliver recommendations to the Governor’s Office within 60 days.

Governor Jim Pillen has signed an emergency proclamation in response to a cybersecurity incident impacting Lincoln County and the City of North Platte.

The proclamation authorizes the Nebraska National Guard Cyber Protection Team to assist local jurisdictions. NEMA is coordinating with state and local partners to support response and recovery efforts and provide resources as needed.
