To wrap up Food Safety Education Month we wanted to talk about the importance of keeping both your hands and workspace clean while cooking. Always wash hands with warm soapy water for 20 seconds before handling food. With hot soapy water, wash all surfaces that encounter raw meat, poultry, fish and eggs before moving to the next step in food preparation. Do not use the same platter or utensils that touched raw product to serve cooked product.

Power outages can happen at any time, for different reasons. In the case of a sudden power outage, keeping food safe is a big concern. Your fridge will keep food safe for up to four hours after a power outage. After four hours, discard any meat, eggs or leftovers. Additionally, food that has been exposed to temperatures over 40° F for more than two hours should be discarded as well. When in doubt… Throw it out!

Always keep food stored at a safe temperature- cold food should be stored at 40F or below. Do not partially cook food beforehand so it grills faster. Partial cooking allows for harmful bacteria to survive and multiply.

Be safe this football season! Go Big Red!
