Today we had the privilege to boost the spirits of one of our own. One of our paramedics from LCPA is fighting cancer. With the help of most of the fire, law enforcement, and EMS agencies in the county, I think we did the trick. The Pink Heals from Peoria also took part, bringing their pink vehicles and doing a presentation. Keep up the good fight Linda!!!

Today after a couple year absence, we were excited to open our doors again for the Concerns of Police Survivors (COPS) Cycle Across Illinois. This marks the 20th anniversary of the ride. The team started in Edwardsville Thursday morning and will arrive in Chicago Sunday. An added bonus this year which had former Lincoln Officer Johnson return all the way from Texas to participate.

The COPS organization consists of officers and families that assist the families of officers killed in the line of duty. We would like to wish our best and safe travels to all of the 120+ riders and support staff with the remainder of the ride

On Monday 3/25/24 at 6:39pm, Lincoln Rural along with auto aid agencies from Lincoln, Beason, Chestnut, and Mt. Pulaski were dispatched for a report of a fully engulfed garage on fire in the 1300 block of State Rt 121. Dispatch advised the fire was starting to catch the house on fire which also had a handicapped occupant that could not get out. Prior to arrival of the first fire unit, a family member and a couple of deputies from the Logan County Sheriff’s Office were able to get the occupant out of the home. Upon arrival of the first fire units the garage was already completely consumed and the back side of the residence was on fire. Due to the strong winds the fire was able to spread very quickly further into the house. An additional call for more tankers was requested from Latham, Elkhart, & Atlanta as well as an engine from Atlanta. With the advanced fire spread all firefighting operations were done from the exterior of the residence. Unfortunately the house was a total loss and due to the extensive damage had to be knocked in the next day due to continued flare ups that weren’t accessible for extinguishment. No personnel were injured during firefighting efforts. We would also like to extend our gratitude to all of above listed agencies as well as Logan Dispatch, Logan County Paramedics, Logan County EMA, and Middletown Fire for covering our district while units were committed to the fire scene. We would also like to recognize the quick action of the 2 deputies who assisted in removing the occupant. With no protective equipment, they went to assist in what had to be done prior to any fire members arriving and truly made a save.

March 24 will mark the 75th Anniversary of start of the fire district. Throughout the rest of the month we will be posting pictures from years past. As you can see in the first 2 pictures, apparatus has come a long way since 1949. These 2 trucks are the original apparatus for the district, the top picture is a 1949 Mack and the bottom is a 1946 Ford.

Every year Kickapoo Park does several large controlled burns to perform land management for prairie grass. By doing this it creates very large smoke plumes that obviously attracts a lot of attention. Weather permitting there will be burns March 6 and March 7. The park will have trained personnel onsite performing these burns.

We are excited to welcome our new EMS response vehicle to the fleet. This unit will be replacing our aging 2007 pickup. This purchase was made possible by an unexpected bequeathment from the estate of the late Betty Emmons. We are profoundly grateful of such a generous donation to our district. We would also like to thank Lincoln Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram, PAFCO Truck Bodies, Justin Matheny, JCL Graphix and Federal Signal for building this new response vehicle.

We wanted to recognize and congratulate Firefighter/EMT’s Emma Sitki and Matthew Isley. Both members began taking the Basic Operations Firefighter class back in August. The class was instructed by the Illinois Fire Service Institute and was a blended class. The blended classes are instructed both online as well as hands on days, which was hosted by Sherman Fire Protection District. After 180 hours of hard work and dedication, both members graduated today at a ceremony held in Sherman.

It is with sadness and regret that we announce the passing of retired career firefighter Roger Sutton. Roger passionately served the district and community for 32 years, retiring in 2004. Roger was the kind of person you almost never encountered in a bad mood and if he was you didn’t know it. Always having a big smile on his face and giving the younger guys a hard time. Even after retiring he would occasionally stop in to chat and tell stories. We would like to extend our deepest condolences to the Sutton family.

UPDATE: Services will be held Monday November 6, from 5-7pm for visitation. A uniform walk through will be at 6pm at Holland Berry & Bennett Funeral Home in Lincoln. A memorial service will follow visitation at 7 pm.
