Gagetown Canada and Maine Legislation
The recent legislative actions in Gagetown, Canada, and Maine have been significant in addressing the health concerns of military personnel exposed to harmful chemicals. The Maine Senate's unanimous support for LD 1640, which implements the recommendations of the Gagetown Harmful Chemical Study Commission, is a testament to the state's commitment to supporting veterans affected by such exposure. This legislation establishes the Base Gagetown Training Registry and reestablishes the Gagetown Harmful Chemical Study Commission, which will collect and maintain data on military service and health conditions related to training at the base. The data collected will be used to support education and outreach efforts and conduct research on the effects of chemical exposure on human health.

The Gagetown Harmful Chemical Study Commission's recommendations, published in January 2024, call for the federal government to provide health services to US military members posted at Gagetown. This includes ensuring access to health services and reviewing the Canadian Report on the herbicide spray program at the base. The commission's findings have led to the enactment of LD 1640, which aims to address the long-standing uncertainties regarding the health impacts of exposure to herbicides at Gagetown.

These legislative actions reflect a growing recognition of the need to support veterans affected by harmful chemical exposure and the importance of addressing the health issues they face. The initiatives are part of a broader effort to ensure that veterans receive the necessary support and recognition for their service and the health risks they have faced.

Letter from a family member about her experience
Every year, we receive a version of this letter from the Navy, stating that Morgan was exposed to contaminated water at Lejeune. This year, the letter was waiting for me when I returned from a trip to Wilmington, North Carolina, to attend a hearing regarding the Camp Lejeune litigation.
The hearing concerned the "expert" that the DOJ has paid FOUR MILLION DOLLARS of your tax money. Dr. Julie Goodman is known as a hired gun for defendants in environmental contamination cases. Her position is that the water wasn't really contaminated and NO ONE got sick from drinking it.
So the Department of Justice is spending YOUR MONEY to pay an 'expert" to say that all of YOUR MONEY that was spent over the past 40 years researching, cleaning up, and trying to mitigate the damages from the contamination at Lejeune wasn't necessary. All the reports and evidence of the last 40 years is wrong. All the blood, sweat, tears, and money poured into getting us a path to justice were completely unnecessary. Because Julie Goodman says it didn't happen. Even though every year I get a letter saying it did.
By the way, the reason for the hearing is she wants to resubmit her report so she can correct the more than 300 errors that were identified after her deposition. FOUR MILLION DOLLARS and its WRONG! How much do you think you'll pay her to make the corrections?

Smith, Christina M., VBATOG

I am excited to share that we have been hard at work planning our next Veteran and Community Connections Expo! Please see the details below.

The event flyer will be released soon. For now, I have attached a “Save the Date” flyer.

Our shared passion for serving those who have served us is at the heart of these initiatives, and I believe we can make a significant impact together. As we continue to support our Service Members, Veterans, Survivors, and their families, it's essential to raise awareness of the benefits and services they have rightfully earned. Many individuals may not fully understand what is available to them or may lack strong connections within their communities.

I am excited to share that we will be organizing this event to help bridge this gap. We believe the Veterans and Community Connection Expo will play a vital role in connecting our community with valuable information and support services. This event promises to be a wonderful opportunity for our community to learn about the incredible Federal, State, and local resources available to Service Members, Veterans, Survivors, and their families.

During these events, participants will have the opportunity to connect with mental health services, engage with representatives who can assist in building important community ties, and learn about safe-storage options aimed at preventing Veteran su***de.

Thank you for your unwavering dedication to this important cause, and for your continued support.
