To accomplish its mission and serve its members, the NHA has developed a strategic framework that consists of four pillars: advocacy and policy, financial stewardship, quality and safety, and strategic partnerships. September is Workforce Development Month, and we are proud to highlight the proactive investments Nebraska hospitals are pouring into building, recruiting, and retaining a strong health care workforce in the state.

The Gordon Memorial Hospital District nursing home is now a designated Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) training site. Hosting classes that graduate approximately 48 students per year, the initiative has improved patient care, significantly reduced reliance on contract labor, and strengthened the local talent pool.

According to a recent Center for Healthcare Quality and Payment Reform analysis, 720 rural hospitals around the country, about one-third of all rural facilities, are at risk of closing due to severe financial challenges. When a rural hospital closes, patient outcomes suffer. A National Bureau of Economic Research report found closures were associated with an 8.7% increase in inpatient mortality for patients with time-sensitive conditions.

Patients suffering the most time-sensitive emergencies faced some of the greatest risk including a 7% mortality increase for stroke and heart attack patients, a 10% increase for sepsis, stroke, and heart attack patients combined, and a 10.6% increase for sepsis patients.

Bottom line? Keeping rural hospitals financially sustainable saves lives.

Congratulations to Roger Reamer on the announcement of his retirement as CEO of Memorial Health Care Systems. Roger, a former NHA Board Chair, winner of the 2019 NHA Excellence in Service Award, and strong rural health advocate, will retire next spring after more than 26 years serving the Seward community and surrounding areas.

In celebration of National Senior Citizens Day tomorrow, the Nebraska Hospital Association is highlighting the contributions of older adults while showcasing the expansive work local hospitals are doing to support aging Nebraskans. Sidney Regional Medical Center in Sidney dedicated resources to support nursing home and assisted living operations, including the addition of a new, secure memory care unit. This investment provides a safe continuum of care tailored for residents navigating cognitive impairments.
