The 2026-2027 BackPack Program has officially begun! 🎒🧡

Since 2004, the BackPack Program has aided students in getting the nutritious food they need over the weekend. Today, nearly 2,300 food-filled backpacks will go home with young scholars!

By sending students home with nutritious food items each Friday, children and their families are able to maintain more consistent access to the food they need to thrive.

We’re so grateful for the volunteers that pack the bags each week, the staff members that deliver them to schools and the donations that make our Child Hunger programs possible.

Volunteer Hall of Fame Spotlight: Josie Filipi

Josie’s integral role in the Food Bank of Lincoln’s volunteer efforts in Crete began with a serendipitous encounter nearly 20 years ago.

While walking home one day, Josie and her then 11-year-old daughter came across a food distribution and noticed a long line of neighbors waiting to be served. Wondering what all of the commotion was about, Josie asked the drivers what was going on. She learned that there was an issue with the truck that they weren’t able to communicate with all the neighbors present due to a language barrier.

Josie, being bilingual, immediately offered her aid as a translator. She stayed to speak with folks in line and help distribute food all afternoon—and her daughter had a blast helping the drivers unload sacks of potatoes from the truck bed. After that, Josie started coming back each month, soon involving her extended family in her volunteer work.

To Josie, volunteering with the Food Bank was an opportunity not only for herself to become more involved, but for students she worked with at St. James Catholic Elementary School who were learning to speak English. She recommended the activity to the school because she knew it would help the kids feel like a productive, positive force in the world.

Working the food distributions gives Josie a sense of how everyone in her community is doing—even the folks she doesn’t know. Having a pulse on the needs of her town empowers her to put her energy where she knows it’s needed most, and we are so grateful that Josie has chosen to make her mark in part through volunteering with our organization.
