With Deep Gratitude

Thank you to all the Town Departments, Boards, Committees, and Community Organizations who participated in the June 14th Fair and Feast! We are especially grateful to our Public Safety teams for running the delicious cookout, and to the talented musicians and dancers who brought our community together through song and dance. Also, a thank you to our Lincoln Minute Men and 4-H Fife and Drum who made history come alive for us at the event.

A heartfelt thank you to our local partners—Twisted Tree, Lizzy’s Ice Cream in Waltham, and Mighty Squirrel —for helping make the day even more special, and to Doherty’s for providing complimentary electric shuttle service. Many thanks as well to Noah Eckhouse for capturing the event with stunning drone photography.

We are deeply appreciative of all our volunteers, including Fair co-organizers Kim Jalet and Tara Mitchell, Feast organizer Laura Wear, the dedicated Kids’ Games sub-committee, the LEAP staff, and the many individuals who generously lent a hand throughout the day.

Finally, a sincere thank you to the extraordinary Lincoln250 Celebrates Committee: Jenn Westlund, Dan Pereira, Jessica Downing, Moha Desai, Carolyn Dwyer, Philana Gnatowski, Don Hafner, and Sara Mattes. Your dedication made this celebration possible.

Although Juneteenth is known as a holiday to specifically celebrate the end of slavery during the American Civil War, its legacy was deeply rooted in the 18th century as well.

Long before the revolution, groups of enslaved individuals spoke out and advocated for their freedoms. In 1773 one group of individuals petitioned Massachusetts Royal Governor Thomas Hutchinson for their freedom. In May 1774, an additional petition was sent to Hutchinson’s successor, General Thomas Gage.

On April 19, 1775, dozens of Black men, both enslaved and free, turned out with various militia and minuteman companies to fight against the King’s army. One of them was Lemuel Haynes, from Granville, MA. Known for his literary talents, Haynes wrote an epic poem called “The Battle of Lexington.” The poem told the direful story of the excursion of the King’s troops to Concord but went on to subtly link the cause of American liberty to that of antislavery.

For Liberty, each Freeman Strives
As its a Gift of God
And for it willing yield their Lives
And Seal it with their Blood

Thrice happy they who thus resign
Into the peacefull Grave
Much better there, in Death Confin’d
Than a Surviving Slave

This Motto may adorn their Tombs,
(Let tyrants come and view)
“We rather seek these silent Rooms
Than live as Slaves to You” . . .

Today we celebrate all those who fought for freedom and liberty in the 18th and 19th centuries. Happy Juneteenth!
