The central theme in AVP is Transforming Power. This is the power, available to us all, to change (transform) what might be a violent or destructive situation into a nonviolent one. The basis of Transforming Power is an appreciation of one’s own self worth and a caring attitude towards all others. Accessing this power requires the ability to separate feelings about someone’s behavior from feelings
for that person. AVP Nebraska offers basic and advanced workshops on violence. The basic workshops provides the basic "tools" for recognizing and resolving conflict in a nonviolent way. The basic workshops also serve the purpose of creating a community while focusing on affirmation, communication, cooperation, and creative conflict resolution. The advanced workshops tackle more difficult concepts/topics like Fear, Anger, Forgiveness, Stereotyping, and more, that are more manageable to address once participants have acquired the basic tools of conflict resolution in a basic workshop. AVP in Nebraska is currently focused on providing workshops to more members of the community and those within the corrections system but with more support the goal is to also provide workshops to youth in the future.
