The NWB invests check-off dollars into 5 key pillars, one of them being international marketing!

State wheat commissions, like the NWB, work with U.S. Wheat Associates to strengthen demand for U.S. wheat in global markets. USW helps connect Nebraska wheat farmers with millers, bakers, and food manufacturers around the world. By combining producer checkoff investments from Nebraska with federal Market Access Program Funding, USW and the NWB help build long-term customer relationships and increase the competitiveness of U.S. wheat overseas. To learn more about U.S. Wheat Associates, use their page - U.S. Wheat.

We spoke with Ralph Loos, the Director of Communications and Global Outreach for U.S. Wheat Associates who shared a personal connection to Nebraska wheat.

"One of my favorite experiences so far with U.S. Wheat was when Nebraska wheat farmer Bob Delsing and I formed our own little ‘Breakfast Club’ while in Asia. I was leading a USW Board Team on a 10-day trip to the Philippines, South Korea and Japan to meet with millers and bakers. Early each morning -- sometimes as early as 5:30 a.m. -- I would wake up in a hotel in one of those three countries and walk to the restaurant for breakfast. Bob was always there waiting for me. We’d share a table, sit, sip coffee, eat and talk about farming and our farms – his in Nebraska and mine back in Illinois. Then, later, each day we would go meet with customers of U.S. wheat. And I would get to overhear Bob talking with the U.S. wheat customers about his farm back home in Nebraska. It gave me a great feeling, thousands of miles away from home.”

The NWB invests check-off dollars into five key pillars, the biggest one being research. Over the past 10 years, the NWB has invested more than 5 million dollars into wheat research!

As apart of this effort, the NWB supports researchers like Assistant Professor at UNL and small grains breeder Dr. Katherine Frels to strengthen and develop Nebraska wheat.

"Thanks to the support from the Nebraska Wheat Board, the UNL Small Grains Breeding Program has released one winter barely, two triticale, and four hard red winter wheat varieties since I became the UNL breeder in 2021. Research funds from the NWB allow us to test our experimental breeding lines across the state growing from our small plots to large State Variety Trial plots, so that we can identify the best of the best disease and stress resistant, excellent quality and high-yeilding small grains varieties for Nebraska producers," said Frels.

This past July, the NWB welcomed a domestic trade team with representatives from the North American Millers' Association.

During the visit, President, Jane DeMarchi and VP of Regulatory and Technical Affairs, Molly Miller, gained a better understanding of NWB funded research efforts through the Small Grains Breeding Program at the University of Nebraska-Lincoln.

Nebraska is investing in innovation, from advancing food science technology, producing high quality wheat and allergy research, among other exciting and important research initiatives.

We are grateful for the opportunity to have hosted them and look forward to continued collaboration!
