A tip of the hard hat to National Public Works Week (May 17-23). In many communities, water works and public works are under the same umbrella. In most of the rest, there is lots of cooperation and collaboration between them. To all of those noting the occasion, especially our friends at the APWA Nebraska Chapter, we offer our cheers!

| During National Public Works Week, communities around North America will recognize and honor public works professionals with everything from touch-a-truck events, displays of public works equipment, name-a-snowplow contests, parades, open houses, community picnics, programs for civic organizations, media events, and social media campaigns. Anyone who grew up playing "The Oregon Trail" has probably heard of dysentery, but did you know that it and other water-borne diseases were the cause of nearly 1 in 4 deaths in the United States in the 1850s?

That was long before the advent of modern drinking water standards, but since the founding of the American Water Works Association in 1881, water professionals have been advancing the state of the art to ensure that safe water is available for drinking, bathing, cleaning, fire protection, and so much more. We celebrate and honor their work this and every other week throughout the year.

Safe water supplies are operating everywhere around you, but it wasn't always this way. Drinking Water Week (May 3-9) is a great time to acknowledge how safe drinking water supplies operate dependably behind the scenes and just how much that means to making modern life possible.

Safe drinking water is a true modern marvel. Did you know that most Nebraska utilities obtain their water from groundwater wells? The long journey water takes to reach those underground sources has amazing natural purifying effects.
