💦 May is National Water Safety Month 💦

As temperatures rise and more families head to pools, lakes, and beaches, now is the perfect time to focus on water safety. Drowning prevention is an important public health priority, and simple steps like learning to swim, supervising children closely, and wearing life jackets can help keep our community safe all summer long. ☀️🌊

Lincoln County Animal Services has confirmed the county’s sixth rabies case of 2026.
On Friday, May 15, Animal Services responded to a call regarding a skunk that entered a fenced yard at a residence off Weatherwood Drive and was killed by the resident’s dogs. Animal Services submitted the specimen to the North Carolina State Laboratory for rabies testing on May 18. There was no human exposure to the skunk. Both dogs were current on their rabies vaccination, received a rabies booster dose, and were placed under a 45-day observation period. On Wednesday, May 20, Lincoln County Animal Services received confirmation of a positive rabies test of the skunk.
This press release will be posted on Lincoln County's website, www.lincolncountync.gov, shared on county social media outlets and a public notification message was sent to properties within the area. We recommend for all pet owners to ensure their indoor pets, outdoor pets, ferrets and livestock are kept current on their rabies vaccine and take advantage of vaccination opportunities through Lincoln County Animal Services and low-cost clinics sponsored by Helping Animals to Survive (HATS). Lincoln County residents may schedule an appointment with Lincoln County Animal Services to receive a 1-year rabies vaccination for $10 per pet (felines and canines only). To keep yourself safe, don’t approach or handle wildlife. Signs of rabies in wild animals can include abnormal amounts of aggression or friendliness, disorientation, wobbliness, circling, and excessive salivation. If you see or encounter a wild animal that may be sick, or is exhibiting signs of abnormal behavior, call Animal Services at (704) 736-4125 to report it.

School nurses do so much more than just take care of students when they are sick or hurt. They are a safe place, a helping hand, and someone students can count on each and every day. We are so thankful for the care, compassion, and support they provide to our schools and community!
