Today is a historical day for su***de prevention and mental health in the U.S.! The National Su***de Prevention Lifeline, now known as the 988 Su***de & Crisis Lifeline, can be more easily reached by calling or texting 988, or chatting on 988lifeline.org.

988 serves as a universal entry point so that no matter where you live in the U.S., you can easily access 24/7 emotional support. You do not have to be suicidal to reach out. Our trained crisis counselors can help you through whatever mental health challenges you are experiencing.

We're so grateful to SAMHSA, the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services, the Federal Communications Commission, and our other su***de prevention and mental health partners in the field for working together to get us here, and we look forward to growing and expanding our services and supports in the years to come.

This week crews have been training with our new Rescue 42 struts. These struts allow our crews to quickly and safely stabilize vehicles that are involved in motor vehicle accidents. These vehicles may have ended up in precarious situations, such as on their roof or side. These struts are also able to be used to stabilize buildings and other large objects so our crews can handle the most difficult emergencies in a quick and safe manor.

As the weather warms up you may see our crews out around town, taking pictures of buildings and possibly even setting up the tower ladder. These crews are completing preplans. These preplans include building photos, floor plans and contact information. This information goes into a program, which is accessible from our apparatus mounted computers and department issued cellphones. Firefighters use these preplans when responding to emergencies, especially those after hours.

We also use these visits as a training opportunity to practice operating our tower ladder and setting it up on these buildings.

05/26/2022

Memorial Day weekend has long been considered the unofficial start of summer. While this weekend and the rest of summer is sure to be filled with fun, we would like to take a moment to talk about Pool Safety.

We would like to concentrate on the ABC's of Pool Safety.

A = Adult Supervision
Assign an adult who can swim as the "water watcher" to specifically watch kids in the pool.
The "water watcher" should keep a cell phone handy with the address of the pool (in case they need to call 9-1-1).
The "water watcher" should only use their cell phone if necessary. They shouldn't browse their cell phone or read when they're the "water watcher."
The "water watcher" should never leave children in or around a pool unattended - not even for a second!

B = Barriers
Install and maintain proper fencing around your pool. Report maintenance problems at a public pool.
Make sure all gates are self-closing, self-latching and open outward away from the pool.
Take away all objects that allow a child to climb up or reach the gate latch or climb over the fence.
Use additional layers of protection including pool safety covers, gate alarms, door alarms, motion-detection devices, etc. Inspect them monthly.

C = Classes
Learn cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR), first aid, and rescue techniques.
Sign up for swim lessons if you don't know how to swim.
Learn how to use rescue equipment around a pool such as a shepherd's hook or life-saving ring.
Learn about the proper behavior in and around water. Teach children the same behavior.
